[Youmu Konpaku cosplay] Touhou Project Gardener and Spring Cherry Blossom Outdoor Shoot

This Outdoor shoot was set on a lakeside slope where spring cherry blossoms were in full bloom, with sunlight dappling through the branches to add a layer of natural highlights to the frame. To recreate the character Youmu Konpaku, many detailed considerations went into hair and makeup styling. The wig had plenty of volume, and the blunt bangs were trimmed to look airy; paired with pale blue-green contact lenses, it emphasized the eye contours and overall translucency, making the gaze look sharper yet tinged with a quiet coolness.

As for the attire, although the original character art has a classic structure, extra care was needed in choosing materials to suit a real outdoor environment. The dark forest green jacket used a fabric with a strong drape to prevent messy wrinkles when the wind blew. The white lace trim along the collar and front placket served as accents, effectively balancing the heaviness of the dark color. The large bow with a white pattern on a black background on the chest was the visual center, and its knot shape needed to fit the collar outline perfectly. The large white ruffled petticoat on the lower half provided excellent volume and layered depth when standing or capturing high-angle shots.

The prop I held this time was a sword hilt; in terms of feel, the hilt wrapping was tighter than expected, with my fingers fitting securely into the gaps of the diamond pattern for a reliable grip. During actual filming, the posture of holding the sword greatly influenced the overall composition. Although it was just a cosplay prop, holding it naturally in front of me helped me quickly tap into the stance of a guardian and swordswoman.

The wind speed was quite high on the day of the shoot, especially on the slope near the water, where the wind directly blew up the skirt hem and wig. Keeping the bangs in place and the bow stable really tested the photographer's snapshot timing and the frequency of on-site adjustments. The angle of sunlight became very high in the afternoon, and shooting toward the light easily produced broad backlighting and lens flares. However, looking at the starburst glare in the upper right corner of the final photos, I felt that the translucent, dreamy feel brought by natural light is an effect hard to replicate in studio photography.

In preparing equipment and props, we brought two spare sword hilts because an Outdoor shoot inevitably encounters soil and grass debris, an insight gained from practical experience. Eye color appears exceptionally bright under sunlight, which is also tied to how clean the base makeup is; base makeup for outdoor shoots needs sufficient durability to remain shine-free even when sweating.

This time, I specifically chose a cherry blossom backdrop during the Cherry blossom season to complement the character's identity. Although the cherry blossoms were only at the early bloom stage, a subtle harmony was formed between the white petals and silver-white wig. Light reflected from the lake acted as an excellent fill light, keeping shadows on the lower half of the face from becoming too harsh. Post-processing focused on basic color restoration while preserving the warm tones brought by sunlight, as I personally feel this natural light-and-shadow atmosphere has more vitality than high-saturation color grading.

As a serious Cosplay photography project, it took nearly a whole day from makeup application to the end of the Outdoor shoot. Running around the lake to adjust angles left my legs and knees somewhat sore, but seeing satisfying shots on camera made all that effort worthwhile. Characters from the Touhou Project series have always had high recognizability; every attempt to recreate them feels like tapping into a fantasy world. Whether researching props or detailing attire, it is all to ensure presenting the character's charm as everyone envisions it in front of the lens.

Throughout the filming process, I paid special attention not to rely excessively on shortcuts in photo editing, trying instead to rely on camera angles and natural light during production to achieve the desired effect. The wig bangs were easily ruffled by the wind, requiring constant combing to maintain a light and fluffy texture. This outfit offered some warmth, but felt stuffy when shooting under the bright sun; outdoor shooting during seasonal transitions poses quite a challenge to one's physical strength and focus.
