[Amber cosplay] Genshin Impact Outrider: Reflections on an Imperfect Recreation

This time, I present an Amber cosplay from Genshin Impact. As a Female cosplayer who frequently takes on commissions and shoots, whenever I portray an energetic character like Amber, I carefully study her demeanor and details.

First is naturally the texture of the costume; that iconic red jacket needs to evoke the agility and lightness of an outrider on the hunt. The goggles are the character's signature prop—I specifically prepared a pair with a realistic metallic finish, clear lenses, and a subtle reflective sheen, which serves as the key visual element for the cover in the third photo, highlighting the character's aura. The contrast of the black undergarment against the red jacket provides fantastic visual impact; during shooting, I deliberately chose a slight high angle to accentuate the collarbone lines around the neckline while adding a touch of playfulness. The red plush doll alongside is also an indispensable companion piece, softening the character's sharper edges and adding a relatable, cozy warmth.

The wig was one of the biggest challenges for this shoot. Amber's hair is very distinct, with iconic, sweeping side bangs. To ensure the curve of the bangs looked natural without appearing stiff, I spent over an hour in front of the mirror tweaking them, repeatedly using a curling iron on the ends to achieve the right fluffiness and keep the entire hairstyle feeling light and airy. Because this Genshin Impact character wears a large red headpiece that easily blocks the camera during selfies, numerous adjustments to framing and angles were necessary during shooting to strike the perfect proportion between the headpiece and face. Makeup also took considerable effort: I wore greenish-gold contacts to faithfully capture her eye color, subtly extended the eyeliner to enlarge the eyes, and picked a warm pink lipstick to give the overall complexion a gentle, approachable glow.

Many praised these photos for feeling so comfortable to look at; in fact, indoor lighting arrangement requires great precision. I used a soft ring light paired with fill lights, eliminating harsh shadows to preserve soft facial contours and give the skin an even, smooth texture. Pose design was also deliberate: beyond raising the goggles with one hand, cradling the plush doll demonstrated the character's approachable warmth. Even though Amber has a dashing, spirited personality as an Outrider, maintaining a touch of coquettish charm in 2D character portrayal adds immense appeal. I personally love the angle where the goggles veil part of my face—it obscures minor facial blemishes while utilizing lens reflections to enrich the photo's depth. Post-processing focused primarily on skin translucency and brightening the gaze, avoiding exaggerated liquifying to retain that genuine 2D texture.

Lastly, I want to talk about my interpretation of Amber. As one of the earliest characters to appear in Genshin Impact, she has long been loved by players for her passionate, courageous, and protective spirit. When recreating her, beyond the physical appearance, I strived to capture that vibrant, positive energy through smiles and expressions. I was actually quite tired on the day of the shoot, but seeing the final results in the viewfinder made all the preparation worthwhile. I hope this photo set brings everyone a vivid and three-dimensional Amber.
