This Awa Subaru cosplay shoot was set on a steel structure bridge at night. To match the character's slightly lazy yet rebellious temperament, the location scouting deliberately avoided the daytime bustle, waiting until late at night when the streetlights came on. Combined with the metallic texture of the bridge deck and the light trails of traffic, the overall atmosphere immediately came together.
In terms of clothing, a classic black suit jacket was chosen, paired with a white shirt and a green-and-white striped tie, while the lower body features a gray-blue-purple plaid pleated skirt. The wig was trimmed with blunt bangs, complemented by the signature white headband. The makeup focused on blue-purple colored contacts to highlight the depth of the character's gaze. Considering the nighttime shoot, the makeup specifically enhanced highlighting and contouring to prevent the flash from flattening the facial contours. Shoes and socks were paired with black patent leather thick-soled loafers and black over-the-knee stockings, which are elements that better express girlish charm in this look.
Night portrait photography really tests lighting. Although the streetlights on the bridge can provide ambient light, top-down lighting easily leaves shadows on the face. Therefore, we used a dual-light setup: the main light source illuminated the face and suit details from an oblique side, while the edge light was used to outline the hair and body silhouette, allowing the character to stand out vividly against the deep night background. During a break between shoots, I sat on the steel components of the bridge, playing with a heart-shaped prop in my hands, which happened to capture a few natural states. The moment of squatting down to tidy up shoes and socks on the wooden boardwalk was also captured by the camera; such unposed angles often look more vivid.
The character of Awa Subaru in Girls Band Cry has a lot of personality to begin with. Her contrasting vibe—seemingly casual and occasionally quirky on the surface, yet harboring deep feelings for music and teammates inside—is something I've always wanted to try and present. Making a peace sign on the bridge, fixing hair, leaning against the wire mesh and looking at the lens are all attempts to capture her everyday side rather than staying merely at the level of posed shots. Although the night shoot was quite tiring due to low temperatures and holding poses for a long time, seeing the urban feel interwoven by light, shadow, and metal structures in the final photos, along with the perfect black over-the-knee stockings details, made this shoot totally worth it. The overall color grading in post-processing leans toward a cold tone, slightly darkening the highlights in the background to give the frame a more cinematic texture.
