[Anchovy Cosplay] Girls und Panzer — Tough Photo Shoot Under Sweltering Heat

Cosplaying in sweltering heat truly demands immense courage and determination, and this time I chose a Night outdoor shoot to recreate this character from Girls und Panzer. In practice, just slipping into this uniform and draping the heavy black cape caused sweat to pour. To convey that dashing yet endearing temperament from the series, I styled light green twintails paired with iconic black bows—though seemingly simple, securing the wig firmly yet naturally took considerable effort.

As for wardrobe selection, a standard white shirt paired with a dark navy pleated skirt might look like basic schoolwear, but adding a long black tie, the eye-catching tricolor stripe badge on the left chest, and that iconic big black cape instantly brought the character to life. Paired with a White thigh-highs outfit and classic black leather shoes, all the crisp agility and boyish charm required for the character lived in these details. Additionally, I prepared a slender red-and-black cane prop to hold during shooting, further emphasizing her composed, slightly arrogant swagger.

This shoot was a collaboration with photographer @ArgoSailor (@亚尔古水手). Even at night, outdoor temperatures remained sweltering, with muggy air that made breathing feel heavy. We selected a backdrop featuring European-style vintage iron railings, cobblestone paths, and streetlamps; under the deep blue night sky, warm yellow streetlights perfectly matched her composed, proud aura during this Night outdoor shoot. However, to make the figure pop with three-dimensional depth and natural skin tones in low light during Cosplay photography, the photographer used high-intensity direct flash, casting sharp, crisp shadows that brought out a striking, hard-edged 2D aesthetic.

The process of producing these photos was a continuous battle to overcome environmental discomforts. The first image features a reaching-out pose, emanating total command; the second is a crouching stance where a close-up angle paired with the White thigh-highs outfit and pleated skirt vividly captures her confident, slightly aggressive demeanor; the third shows me leaning against railings, utilizing vertical composition and vintage lamp posts to enhance vertical depth, presenting a contemplative or observational pose. With every shutter click, I had to readjust sweat-soaked hair strands and reposition the cape to ensure no awkward garment folds appeared.

There was also an unexpected hitch during the session—swarms of outdoor mosquitoes late at night. Wearing a short skirt and White thigh-highs outfit meant my legs became prime targets. Yet to maintain flawless poise before the lens, I had to tough it out, holding my facial expressions steady while enduring intense itching. Additionally, holding the slender cane required delicate positioning; raising it even slightly too high blocked flash illumination, requiring trial after trial to find the ideal angle. Managing the dynamic drape of the cape during a Night outdoor shoot was equally tricky—it needed to hang with stylish composure without swallowing up the skirt.

Though it was a Night outdoor shoot, nighttime offered little relief from summer heat challenges. The heavy cape draped over my shoulders felt muggy like a thick blanket; only upon removing the wig at the end did I catch a fleeting breeze. Yet seeing the final photos made every hardship worthwhile. This Anchovy cosplay shoot was not merely about replicating physical appearance, but about transmitting that unshakeable composure and ultimate reliability defining her charm within Girls und Panzer.

Naturally, bringing 2D anime characters off the screen into reality requires visual translation—using lighting, makeup, and garment textures to give flat character designs tangible depth is precisely what makes Cosplay photography so captivating.
