[Remilia Cosplay] Touhou Project Majestic Mistress, Scarlet Devil Mansion's Phantom in the Night

This set of Touhou Project Remilia cosplay shot at the Firefly ACG Expo has finally been curated today. The convention venue was vast and chaotic in lighting, but fortunately, photographer @白辛数星星 set up precise lighting on site, darkening the ambient light while using artificial light sources to outline the main silhouette, giving the images an incredible texture.

Let's talk about the core elements of this shoot: the outfit is a red-and-white Lolita dress featuring layered lace and ruffles. To restore the character's aesthetic grace, I wore a three-layered rigid petticoat underneath for solid support, allowing the ruffles along the hem to flare out naturally without collapsing. The lace mob cap is quite wide, requiring careful smoothing of the pleats on both sides to avoid looking bulky. The translucent tulle fringes attached to the cuffs are very fluid, but I had to constantly watch out for nearby equipment while walking around the convention to prevent snagging.

The main prop is that large red spear. Made of a firm material with a distinct luster, it catches specular highlights easily under camera flashes, so we deliberately adjusted the spearhead's direction during shooting to avoid overexposed hotspots and detail loss. It carries a bit of weight; holding it with one hand or resting it on my shoulder required mastering my balance center. For full-body wide shots, I mostly dragged it beside me, utilizing its long shaft to lead the viewer's eye.

In this set of photos, I particularly enjoyed controlling my balance and posture relative to the spear—tilting my body slightly when raising the spear and keeping my shoulders relaxed when looking back. Because a red prop acts like a sharp blade in a moody setting, its presence becomes part of the composition. Rather than swinging it around aimlessly, we let it interact with body contours to form stable triangles or extension lines. The lace and white tulle on my arms also produced refractive light-and-shadow shifts under the flash. These subtle details significantly elevated the photo's refinement and storytelling.

Regarding poses and expressions, to fit the "majestic mistress" persona mentioned in the post, I kept my expression restrained. No exaggerated smiles—just maintaining a cool, confident gaze. I was especially satisfied with the look-back posture in Photo 2; this angle highlights the line from shoulder to back, creating richer tension alongside the gaze compared to a straightforward front angle. Red eyes in a dark setting become deeply focused, serving as the visual focal point of the whole frame.

The shooting environment was actually quite interesting. In the background, you can see blurred light stands, softboxes, reflectors, and passing crowds at the expo. The photographer used a wide aperture to blur the background, locking focus solely on the subject. Shooting on location like this at an anime convention tests rapid capturing skills and compositional mastery. High-contrast light and shadow made the red-and-white dress and red spearhead pop vividly against the dark backdrop, delivering the exact strong visual impact I envisioned.

Touching up makeup on set, putting on and taking off coats, and navigating crowds to find angles was exhausting, but seeing the camera playback made every bit of effort worth it. Many passersby and photographers looked over or asked to take photos—this vibrant atmosphere unique to anime conventions is a key part of the shoot experience.

As the model, I gained a deeper understanding of the character's charm during this process. The red-and-blue color scheme combined with bat wings inherently carries a gothic detachment and elegance. Perhaps it was this atmospheric resonance that gave the final photos an unmistakable aura. Building on this experience, I hope to shoot works that align even better with character lore and carry stronger ambiance in future massive conventions or studio settings with ideal scenes. The photographer's composition and keen judgment of light were key to the final quality. Overall, it was a remarkably smooth and rewarding convention cosplay photography experience.
