The convention photos from Day 1 of the Chengdu Worldline Animation and Comic Exhibition are finally edited and ready! This time, I cosplayed Anran from Overwatch.
A lot of thought went into the early preparations for this convention. The orange, black, and gold color scheme of the costume is extremely eye-catching, but achieving the ideal effect under the complex lighting of the exhibition hall required strict control over details. The wig is a high black ponytail; to capture that dashing yet slightly playful vibe, I purposely left some wispy bangs on both sides of my forehead and styled them with hairspray for a slightly messy, textured look, so that the strands would have more dynamic movement when looking back or turning my head. For the makeup, I used a reddish-brown eyeshadow to match the red colored contacts, dotted a tiny mole under my eyelid as an accent, and chose earrings featuring green beads paired with red tassels. Walking around the convention hall, they swayed with my movements, maximizing the attention to detail.
The shoulder design of the costume features outward-bulging orange puff sleeves with yellow strap details, paired with inner black faux-leather long gloves, giving the overall look a very strong sense of power. The shield prop in hand was also a key focus of this preparation. The orange base is printed with white geometric key-fret patterns, the edges are alternating black and gold, and the center features a golden flower-shaped decoration. This shield is quite heavy to hold; to lift it steadily and strike good poses, I deliberately practiced my arm core strength before the shoot.
The lighting and shadow environment on the day of the shoot was quite a challenge. Instead of choosing bright, flat lighting, we found a relatively dark background and had the photographer use side-backlighting on my face and shoulders. This lighting method creates a strong contrast between light and shadow, sharply outlining the contours of the body while making the vibrant orange and black colors of the costume even more saturated. To capture the most satisfying gaze, I held the shield while repeatedly adjusting angles, looking back, freezing, and continuously testing the focus point of my eyes and the tilt of my head. Because the prop is quite heavy, maintaining the poses was physically demanding, but seeing the tension sparked by the collision of light, shadow, and color in the raw photos made it all feel worth it.
While walking around the convention, the adaptability of this look pleasantly surprised me. Although the venue was bustling with people and the temperature wasn't low, seeing so many fellow fans who also love this character, communicating and collecting photos together, the atmosphere of the entire process was truly wonderful. As a brand-new attempt, I am very satisfied with the makeup, styling, and prop presentation this time. Because I love the texture of the light and shadow and my eye expression in this photo so much, I couldn't help but share this one first. Afterward, once I finish editing photos from other angles, I'll gradually share them as well.
