This Japanese retro portrait photography set from Asukayama Park is finally ready to share! Let's dive straight into the session. Many people have been asking about the wardrobe styling: it's simply a blue-and-white printed camisole sundress featuring delicate ruching at the bodice and a hemline pieced with layered white lace. To complement the outfit, I styled my hair into Twintails tied with white lace ribbons, paired with White over-the-knee socks and dark brown vintage loafers. The essence of this look lies in its cohesive palette: the crisp, clean energy of blue and white, combined with the flattering leg-elongating effect of the White over-the-knee socks, keeps the visuals sharp without feeling cluttered. When shooting this aesthetic, I place great emphasis on harmony between wardrobe and surroundings. Asukayama Park features vintage yellow train cars, red metal climbing jungle gyms, and a blue elephant slide; with such vibrant environmental color, a more understated outfit actually pops far better on camera.
For gear, we utilized a Nikon Z6III paired with the Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 Di III VXD lens. This lens is extraordinarily convenient for outdoor portraits: transitioning seamlessly from environmental 35mm wide shots to 150mm telephoto close-ups with a single zoom eliminated the need to swap lenses across the park. The bright F2-2.8 aperture produced creamy background blur under natural light, beautifully turning light dapples filtering through tree leaves into layered visual bokeh. The Z6III's autofocus tracking was remarkably dependable; during dynamic snaps on the slide or climbing frames, the eye-detection AF remained glued to my eyes with virtually zero hunting.
Throughout the shoot, we followed no rigid script, aiming instead to capture an effortless, relaxed state of being. We started around the vintage train cars, where I leaned against the window looking out or sat quietly on wooden benches while the photographer captured unscripted, natural moments. Moving toward the jungle gym and slides, the color contrasts sharpened; the alternating red and blue play equipment infused the Amusement park portraits with lively energy. A quick tip: if shooting under harsh midday sunlight, seek dappled shade under leafy canopies or utilize playground structures to prevent unflattering hard shadows on the face. Fortunately, the light remained delightfully soft throughout our session at Asukayama Park, and combined with the rendering power of the 35-150mm lens, the straight-out-of-camera colors were strikingly clean and translucent.
Speaking of emotional cues, the quip 'You really only ever think about yourself, don't you?' was actually an amusing candid moment on set. To coax out a playfully tsundere, exasperated expression before the lens, the photographer jokingly read that line aloud. That playful dynamic captured lively nuances far beyond a standard smile. In portrait photography, looking stiff or overly posed is the biggest pitfall; chatting, bouncing jokes, and laughing with the photographer naturally unlocks candid expressions. For instance, the shot of me reclining on the slide was initially just a framing test, but the unusual angle showcased the full-body outfit and limb extensions gorgeously. The session spanned from early afternoon into dusk, and the shifting sun angles painted the familiar playground in ever-evolving tones of light and shadow. All in all, it was a thoroughly delightful shoot that gave me fresh inspiration for this blue-and-white look.
