Shooting outdoor locations in summer, ice cream is definitely an essential prop. This time, we chose to shoot in a bright yellow-themed neighborhood with extremely vivid colors. To avoid being swallowed up by the high-saturation background, I deliberately picked this pure white JK sailor uniform. White is visually the most refreshing, paired with light blue neckerchief and cuff bindings, which just neutralizes the monotony. Twintails plus light blue star hairpins not only increase the girlish feel, but also bring great dynamic feel when shaking the hair during shooting.
In terms of outfit, black platform loafers paired with white mid-calf socks are the finishing touch. The black-and-white contrast can visually lengthen the leg lines, and coupled with the tightening visual effect unique to white stockings, it can nicely modify the leg shape and make the overall proportions look slimmer. White stockings are truly a match made in heaven for the JK sailor uniform; by finding a slightly good angle, you can capture very attractive leg curves. The skirt length is moderate, naturally spreading out when sitting, or lifting the skirt hem when standing, both of which can showcase the unique lightness of anime-style fashion.
The shooting process is actually quite a test of interactivity. To avoid stiff posing, I brought an ice cream and a brown teddy bear. Lifting the ice cream to the face, pretending to eat it, or holding the bear leaning against posters and yellow traffic signal boards—having something in hand makes the actions much more natural. This outfit is very suitable for some poses like stretching, lifting one leg, or half-squatting, which can well showcase vitality. When facing the lens, the gaze can have a bit more playfulness or innocence, and paired with the twintails styling, the energetic girl vibe is maxed out straight away.
Regarding framing, bright yellow chairs, orange bases, and colored stickers on glass windows are all great composition elements. For example, using signage as a foreground, or using a bench to create a diagonal sense of extension. Low-angle shooting can avoid passersby while making the signboards look imposing. When shooting during the day, the light is relatively harsh, so try to use building shadows or reflectors to soften the face. By evening when the lights turn on, the whole scene warms up, and the white clothes appear even more translucent under the light. If night scene fill light is in place, the photo output rate is extremely high.
This shoot not only satisfied my desire to shoot in a Japanese fresh style, but also integrated anime-style fashion into daily scenes. No complex decorations are needed; simple and clean color schemes plus a few small props can produce ideal photos. The atmosphere of the whole neighborhood is great, just casually walking and stopping, you can capture many vivid moments.
