The guiding theme for today's set is a Japanese maid cafe aesthetic. The location was set in a white-toned bakery in Chongqing (Chongqing photoshoot booking)—this clean, luminous backdrop photographed exceptionally well.
Let's start with the wardrobe: a classic black-and-white Maid outfit. The top features puff sleeves and a white turned-down collar cinched with a black ribbon bow, accented at the center by a metallic ring buckle. Layered over it is a white apron trimmed with delicate lace, featuring two decorative buttons on the black chest fabric. The skirt is a crisp black pleated skirt. To complement the outfit, I wore a white lace headdress adorned with cat ears and tied my hair into black twin tails, while dialing up the blush in my makeup to project an extra energetic glow.
The ensemble was styled with over-the-knee White stockings and dark brown chunky-heel Mary Jane shoes. While white stockings photograph gorgeously, they demand vigilance on set; sitting and moving around easily causes wrinkling or slipping. With every pose change, my assistant had to help smooth and straighten the fabric.
The prop setup was wonderfully diverse: French baguettes, pineapple buns, wrought-iron bread baskets, kitchen oven mitts, and sealed glass jars packed with coffee beans and nuts. The pink checkered oven mitts left a deep impression—the photographer had me slip them on and cup them like cat paws against both cheeks. It looks simple on camera, but keeping it natural rather than stiff was quite tricky since the mitts were bulky, requiring controlled wrist tension. When handling the baguette, to keep it from looking awkward, I tried cradling it, carrying it over my shoulder, or extending it forward as if offering a treat, letting the prop integrate organically into the frame.
The set dressing was thoughtfully curated: white shelves lined with glass jars flanked by English chalkboards, alongside a blackboard listing coffee specials like Osmanthus Latte and Banana Milk Latte. Sitting on the wooden bench or leaning out from the serving window to pass the bread basket were playful interactions developed on the fly with the photographer.
Shooting indoor Cafe photoshoot sets in Chongqing during summer genuinely tests your stamina. Even with indoor air conditioning, moving between poses in a long-sleeved Maid outfit, White stockings, and a wig worked up quite a sweat. Furthermore, capturing micro-expressions often required freezing a single pose for seconds at a time. Yet seeing the bright exposure and soft, clean white balance across the monitor confirmed that chasing this refreshing Japanese aesthetic was entirely worthwhile. I strove to convey a warm, welcoming, and playfully anime-esque maid persona before the lens rather than just rigid, hollow modeling.
The entire shoot was filled with laughter, especially the candid moment balancing the bread basket and baguette atop my head. By wrap time, the baguette prop had softened considerably, and we snacked while wrapping up the final frames.
