Teaming up with Yeyehu for this shoot, we brought the DreamyDivas series from Gridman to life, with me portraying Rikka Takarada and her cosplaying Akane Shinjo. From the moment I unboxed the outfit, I was contemplating how to balance Rikka's laid-back ease with that edgy, cool street attitude. The textiles are distinctive: an oversized color-blocked athletic windbreaker in blue, white, and red layered over a black patent-leather halter tube top and matching patent miniskirt, accented by utility straps across the waist and legs for a techwear edge. While patent leather catches studio flashes brilliantly in-camera, it attracts fingerprints and dust like a magnet during actual shooting, so we had to wipe it down gently with a soft microfiber cloth before every take to keep the finish pristine.
The glossy black bandeau and miniskirt were form-fitting; to sculpt a clean silhouette, I dedicated plenty of time beforehand to core posture workouts. The location was scouted by our photographer Yetaro: concrete night stairwells paired with chain-link fences, framed against blue-violet neon signs and ambient warm fairy lights in the distance, immediately maximizing the cyberpunk, urban night aesthetic. Night portrait photography places unforgiving demands on lighting setups. Yetaro brought multiple portable strobes and continuously calibrated angles; because high-gloss patent leather easily blows out or produces awkward specular glares, we spent significant time dialing in the fill and rim keys.
The chemistry with Yeyehu felt seamless. In my initial solo frame, I leaned along the metal railing of the stairwell holding a smartphone in a brown case, earphone cables dangling freely, while the camera captured my over-the-shoulder gaze. For our duo shots, we sat together on the concrete steps—she wore a purple baseball cap with over-ear headphones, while I sported red-and-blue angular hairpieces and a black choker. One shot features me holding the phone to make a 'hush' gesture toward the lens as she leans over to glance at the screen; this slice of casual yet subtly mysterious interaction mirrors the bond between the two characters so well. Throughout the takes, we exchanged posing notes—like angling legs to catch iridescent laser reflections on the boot covers, or adjusting hip placement so the waistline appeared natural.
The holographic boot covers around my calves flared with iridescent color under the flashes, creating sharp textural depth against the black combat boots. To recreate Rikka's eye makeup faithfully, I selected vivid blue lenses and added a subtle reddish wash around the outer corners, which paired with the straight black wig and blunt bangs to retain 2D recognition while grounding the aesthetic in tangible real-world dimension. Due to dynamic movement, the patent-leather separates shifted easily, requiring regular garment resets between poses to ensure every frame looked crisp.
Though shooting outdoors at night was physically draining, seeing the raw images in the camera monitor wiped away all exhaustion. The chilly evening wind and piercing flashes ultimately coalesced into imagery rich with moody tension. This creative collision between Rikka and Akane was an absolute delight.
