The riverside breeze was truly ferocious, sending both my twintails and skirt hem flying wild. To be honest, I'm still conflicted about how to define this outfit—is it a maid dress? The collar clearly evokes a sailor suit. Is it an idol stage costume? The skirt cut and lace accents feel almost too casual. In the end, I simply gave up overthinking it, threw it on, and rolled into shooting along the riverbank.
For this night session, we brought along the Sony 50-150mm GM lens. Amidst the complex, shifting light sources along the waterfront, the creamy bokeh yielded by the wide aperture was thoroughly addictive. The distant high-rises and luminous bridge lights melted completely into dreamy, rounded light orbs through the glass, effortlessly wiping out background visual clutter. Even though nighttime outdoor shoots demand rigorous fill lighting, the blue and white palette of the dress looked remarkably pristine and translucent when framed against the cool night tones.
Posing with that colossal lollipop prop proved to be a real test of arm endurance, as I had to keep it elevated to hold dynamic shapes. That pose holding the snack bag in the photos was honestly just because the biting wind made me cold, so I was looking for something to warm my hands (just kidding). Walking back and forth along the wooden riverwalk boardwalk in over-the-knee White stockings and chunky black platform Mary Janes tested my balance—especially during single-leg standing stances where sudden gusts made me sway, but I gritted my teeth and pushed through for the shot.
The frame seated on the steps is my personal favorite, mostly because I was genuinely exhausted from walking toward the tail end of the shoot. The wooden plank steps were chilly to the touch, but sitting cross-legged allowed the dual interplay of street lamps and fill lights to bring out a gorgeous sheen on the White stockings. Despite being completely spontaneous, the compositional balance and fabric textures harmonized unexpectedly well. Night portraits are notoriously prone to noisy grain explosions, but thanks to the pristine optical quality of this lens, the straight-out-of-camera color saturation and crisp sharpness saved me immense time during color grading.
The city's night skyline paired with chilly river gales gave this series a truly distinct atmospheric tension. While the aesthetic bounced playfully between maid attire and a sailor-style stage costume, the spontaneous, candid execution avoided any stiff posturing. That's how this set came to life, and I hope everyone gets a kick out of enjoying it.
