Shooting Megumi Kato's night view near Daxue Road in Wujiaochang this time was actually quite a challenge. On weekend evenings, Daxue Road is practically packed with people; finding clean backgrounds with proper lighting on the bustling streets required quick reflexes and constant shifts in camera angles. Because ambient lighting is so chaotic—from streetlamps and shop signs to headlights of passing cars—I only brought a very weak face light. Its primary purpose was to offset odd, tinted color casts in the surroundings while preserving the clean, natural skin tone on the face, ensuring harsh flash lighting wouldn't shatter that unique night street atmosphere.

The lens used was a 50mm f/1.8. This lens offers fantastic cost-performance and delivers surprisingly expressive rendering for night scenes. When wide open, pedestrian crossings and streetlamps in the background melt into beautiful bokeh balls, doing an excellent job of blurring away passersby. However, a large aperture also carries the drawback of a very narrow depth of field, so I was exceptionally careful with focusing to ensure the catchlights in the eyes remained razor-sharp, giving the subject a vibrant soul. To strive for straight-out-of-camera texture, white balance calibration was also critical: I leaned the color temperature slightly toward warm yellow to create a color contrast with the cool, fair complexion, resulting in a much more translucent image.

Megumi Kato is known as 'Saint Megumi' in Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend; her personality is gentle and calm, without overt aggressiveness, yet always considerate of everyone's feelings unassumingly. To reflect this vibe in the photos, I kept the pose design as relaxed as possible. For instance, when looking back over the shoulder, an exuberant grin wasn't necessary—a subtle upward curl of the lips was just right. Resting against a railing while gently brushing back strands of hair, my gaze could either follow the light toward the camera or drift off into a gentle daze. The resulting images avoid feeling like forced cosplay staging, evoking instead the delightful illusion of a 2D anime character genuinely existing in our everyday reality. When scouting angles in crowded areas, I like utilizing street depth—standing beside road signs or on crosswalks—using the moderate perspective compression of the 50mm lens to blur out the crowds in the background and firmly lock the visual focus onto the subject.

The outfit this time was also a configuration brimming with everyday charm. A white fuzzy beret paired with a brown bob wig and a thin black ribbon tied at the collar looked both obedient and richly detailed. The red knit sweater was very flattering to the skin, giving off a healthy glow under night lights, while the pairing of a multi-tiered white pleated skirt, White stockings, and burgundy patent leather Mary Janes dialed the anime attributes up to the max. White stockings are actually quite prone to reflective overexposure in night photography, so I deliberately adjusted the distance and angle of the face light—not only to preserve normal light-to-shadow gradations on the legs, but also to prevent lost fabric texture from white reflections. To match this outfit, I practiced poses in front of the mirror at home beforehand to ensure modesty in all movements while showing off the layered pleats of the skirt and the delicate lace trim of the stockings.

The entire shoot was quite tightly paced, squeezing through the crowds while staying constantly mindful of passing pedestrians and e-bikes. In particular, for the shot crouching beside the street pillar to catch a low perspective, we had to press the shutter rapidly during the split second when foot traffic cleared. The allure of a Night portrait lies precisely in the narrative storytelling brought by ambient lighting: without complicated lighting setups, merely finding the right angle can transform an ordinary roadside into a scene with wonderful atmosphere. The color grading of this set also leaned in a cinematic direction; the red sweater was immensely eye-catching at night, with the twinkling lights in the background shining like stars to evoke a tranquil yet grounded, everyday mood.
