[Yae Miko Cosplay] Photoshoot Experience and Costume Details in a Red and White Miko Outfit

Today, I'm mainly talking about the photoshoot process and costume details of this Yae Miko red-and-white miko outfit.

First is the wig. Light pink long hair can easily look overly plastic under strong light, so before the shoot, I specifically used a matte spray to soften the shine and give the strands a finer texture. The beast ears on top were actually quite tricky to secure; to prevent the ear accessories from falling off or tilting sideways, I hid an invisible wire support frame inside the hairnet. This way, even with larger movements during the shoot, the ears remained standing upright.

As for the costume, the red-and-white style carries a rich Japanese aesthetic, but the low-cut neckline required fashion tape to stay secure during movement. The round purple-and-gold ornament on the chest serves as the visual highlight of the entire outfit; however, it has some weight to it, so I added snap buttons to the inner lining to prevent the top from sagging and spoiling the shoulder silhouette. The sleeves feature a broad bell-sleeve design that looks gorgeous, but easily catches on table corners when arranging props or posing, so I had to constantly watch out to keep the sleeve cuffs from getting snagged in the background elements.

The lower body is styled with black safety shorts beneath a red-and-white paneled skirt. The platform geta sandals on my feet are around 7–8 cm tall, which takes some getting used to for anyone not accustomed to high heels. The white straps and tassels on the geta serve as wonderful accents, but when walking, controlling one's rhythm is essential; otherwise, an unstable center of gravity can cause wobble and blur snapshot focus.

The setting was chosen in a Japanese-style indoor venue, where white lattice sliding doors and red pillars echoed the costume's color scheme nicely. The oil-paper umbrellas on set served as brilliant atmospheric props: the front umbrella, featuring a black base with red-and-white crane motifs, blocked off empty floor space to add depth to the frame, while a large red umbrella in the back served as a background color accent, contrasting beautifully with the pink hair and red-and-white dress.

Regarding poses, I chose a seated pose on the floor this time. During the shoot, my weight rested on my left arm propped against the floor. As my legs stretched out, to show smooth body lines, the photographer shot from a low camera angle, effectively extending calf length and creating a slender visual illusion. However, maintaining core tension in the waist and abdomen was crucial; slacking off would make the overall silhouette appear sluggish.

In post-processing, rather than over-saturating the colors, I preserved the raw light and shadow gradations. I lowered the overall ambient brightness slightly to darken the red pillars while brightening skin tone, making the Pink hair styling pop even more. This retained the elegant atmosphere of Japanese-style indoor lighting without making the image harsh to the eyes.

On set, imagining the character's persona in front of the lens was immensely fun. Through prop accents and being fully clad in costume, one can temporarily step away from daily life and experience a completely distinct aesthetic expression. That concludes my sharing for this photoshoot experience.
