The theme of this shoot revolves around Touhou Project. To restore the artistic conception of snow containing spring flying into the Netherworld, we arranged a dense smoke effect in the outdoor location, supplemented by powerful backlighting and top lighting. As Youmu Konpaku, I put on the classic green sleeveless vest layered over a white short-sleeved shirt, along with the pleated skirt bearing white crescent moon textures; the black bow tie at the collar and the twin-horned bow headpiece enhanced the character's crisp, efficient demeanor. My partner, portraying Yuyuko Saigyouji, selected a light pink curly hairstyle, paired with an exquisite lace bonnet adorned with flowers and a richly layered blue-and-white western dress. The wide ruffled cuffs and the lace pleats of the skirt hem hold a magnificent vintage feel, and the playing card props add a touch of mystery.
During the actual shooting process, we experimented with many different postures to capture satisfying dynamic moments. For instance, the duo interactive movement of using a long black prop to point at the face, combined with my stern stance holding the long sword, creates a subtle interactive tension—carrying both the unique restraint and bond of the Netherworld Dwellers' Team while naturally holding a sense of storytelling. For the cover picture, we chose a composition that showcases more of our mutual unspoken understanding: I struck a highly dynamic forward-leaning pose with the sword sheath slung diagonally across my body, while my partner slightly tilted her head up from the side-rear, her hand-held cards appearing to materialize a Netherworld barrier. The entire frame is enveloped by the drifting white smoke, forming a celestial yet slightly dim visual contrast under the illumination of the powerful white light from above.
Touhou Project characters' clothing and accessory details are often highly intricate, making this outdoor location shoot an immense test for makeup and styling. To withstand the piercing light amidst the outdoor grass and bushes, the base makeup and contouring underwent multiple adjustments, striving to align with the cool aloofness and magnificence of the original 2D setting. Although the drifting smoke across the frame yields an amazing output effect, it also amplifies the floating, elusive quality of the image; fortunately, we made ample early preparations, and the final emotional tension captured is completely in place. My partner's expressiveness was also exceptionally outstanding; her gentle temperament matches the character of Yuyuko beautifully, and our movements connected flawlessly during coordination, truly achieving the unity of human and nature, character and light.
In the outdoor environment, several branches of white flowers drooping from the top perfectly accent the upper section of the frame, bringing a slice of vitality to this springtime essence and echoing the specific seasonal sense of that particular period in 'Touhou Youyoumu'. Through this finished photoset, we attempted to graft a corner of Gensokyo into a real-world natural environment, letting 2D characters step into a tangible world filled with the fragrance of soil. Every time I put on these clothes, I can directly experience the character's state of mind. The process of shooting is not just a recording, but a deep character realization—especially when facing such high-impact smoke effects and top-lit frames, maintaining natural expressions and gazes is highly challenging. Yet seeing the final rendered output, I believe all the hardships were entirely worth it. From atmosphere control down to post-production shadow tones, this set strives to accurately restore that cool, fragile, yet resilient Touhou aura, hoping to convey the character's unique, one-of-a-kind charm through this anime cosplay work.
