[Yae Miko cosplay] Genshin Impact Character Fidelity & Photoshoot Insights

This shoot was truly a process of materializing my understanding of the character. The tailoring and patterns of this costume are extraordinarily intricate, especially the wide white sleeves, which create noticeable air resistance when moving—catching the air like wings with the slightest motion—requiring conscious control. The golden headpiece and long pink hair were the centerpiece of the styling; securing the wig to ensure the hair strands flowed faithfully to the 2D design took substantial time.

When capturing the first half-body close-up, considering that a close focal distance captures facial features most directly, I adjusted my gaze's focus, looking into the lens with a subtle blend of lazy composure and quiet confidence, paired with delicate finger gestures to evoke the character's innate poise. The red staff prop had substantial weight, and keeping it suspended in mid-air with an effortless attitude required hidden arm strength.

The second full-body photo emphasized silhouette and body lines. That single-leg stance was chosen to showcase the high-slit design of the skirt hem, while the white strappy geta sandals visually elongated the lines of the feet. However, balancing like that severely tested calf endurance; combined with being outdoors in chilly weather, bare legs can easily compromise skin condition. Thanks to the photographer's pose guidance, after several consecutive tries, we captured the angle that showed the leg contours at their best.

Because we communicated thoroughly beforehand, the choice of backdrop was straightforward: cold gray steps and railings were used as the setting, primarily to contrast and highlight the high-saturation red, white, and black palette of the Japanese style attire, creating a sharp warm-cold contrast. In terms of lighting, the key light struck the front to better define facial contours and the wig's silky sheen, while the background fell naturally into dark shadow, making the subject pop. When coordinating with the staff prop, we adjusted the grip angle multiple times to ensure it wouldn't block my face.

In post-processing, we avoided flamboyant alterations, focusing on skin translucency and fabric texture fidelity, striving to align closely with the character's presence in Genshin Impact. While preparing the props and costume was a lengthy endeavor, shooting from final makeup touch-ups to completing full-body poses took about two to three hours. Facing the camera, one must maintain complete relaxation to project that effortless, nonchalant aura; straining too hard only results in stiffness. Looking at the contrast between the close-up and the full-body shot, one can clearly see different facets of the character conveyed across perspectives.
