Putting on this red-and-white shrine maiden outfit, I instantly entered the state of Reimu Hakurei. The large bow and tassel details on the headpiece are numerous, requiring careful adjustment when wearing to maintain balance without blocking the line of sight. This time, I specially chose a black-handled gohei as a prop, paired with red-and-white knotted cords and shide (paper streamers), creating a stronger sense of shrine ritual visually. The lace and ruffle layers of the costume are richer than expected, and the embroidery on the cuffs and neckline shows a subtle luster under natural light.
During the shoot, we intentionally experimented with different lighting environments. Direct outdoor sunlight highlights the texture of the fabric and the saturation of the red tones, while soft indoor light makes the skin tone and eye makeup look more delicate. Although this outfit is gorgeous, it is still quite lightweight to move around in, so swinging the gohei isn't too restricted. As for the eye makeup, to match Reimu's slightly heroic demeanor, the eyeliner was slightly elongated and deepened at the outer corners. Paired with reddish-brown colored contacts, the gaze becomes a bit sharper. Regarding the hairstyle, the straight bangs and the long, blunt side-locks are the soul. The hair strands need to be combed clean and neat to avoid any messiness that would ruin the character's cool and aloof aura.
Every time I shoot characters from Touhou Project, I can't help but marvel at how crucial the costume is for recreating the character's temperament—especially Reimu's classic red-and-white color scheme, which is practically the visual icon of the Touhou series. The combination of props and posing also adds a storytelling element to the frames; for example, holding the gohei while looking back over the shoulder, or looking down to adjust the cuffs, can capture different charms.
In the photos from this shoot, compositions from different angles bring entirely different atmospheres. The outdoor one, with sunlight casting slanting shadows on the wooden door, naturally carries a lazy afternoon vibe, while the indoor close-up focuses more on the details of the face and props. For fans who love Touhou Project, Reimu Hakurei's charm lies not only in her powerful combat strength but also in her casual, go-with-your-own-pace personality in daily life. As a passionate roleplay attempt, I hope this set of photos captures this unique vibe through Anime-style photography.
