I shot a set of photos for Shimoe Koharu cosplay in a pink-toned maid outfit cosplay. A lot of thought went into the details of this costume. Aside from the basic pink puffy dress and white ruffled apron, the most special parts are the pair of black wings on the back and the headpiece with a black-bordered bow on top. The red heart buttons adorned on the chest add a touch of a playful little devil vibe to the overall sweet style, which perfectly fits Koharu's tsundere and contradictory personality.
For the makeup, I specially enhanced the contours of the eye makeup. The blending of eyeshadow and eyeliner paired with the colored contacts aims to capture Koharu's expression that sits right between innocence and alertness. When wearing the twin-tail wig, I also carefully adjusted the curvature of the hair strands so that the hair accessories on both sides could perfectly frame the face.
The shooting environment this time was chosen to be a bedroom setting filled with pink fairytale elements. The giant pink bear plushie nearby and the vintage white telephone, with such a large area of soft pink tones, match the costume perfectly. The photographer had excellent control over natural light and the soft-focus atmosphere. To prevent the frame from looking overly saccharine, we focused on strengthening the three-dimensional light and shadow of the face in the lighting setup, ensuring that the pink didn't lose its layering.
On my feet, I paired white lace-trimmed short socks with black platform Mary Jane shoes. This style combination added quite a bit of exquisiteness to the overall look. There were actually many little episodes during the shooting process. For example, when fluttering around on the bed in this short dress, the feathers of the wings would inevitably get pressed, requiring repeated angle adjustments to capture a posture that felt both relaxed and complete.
The few photos you see were selected from the best camera angles that the photographer and I spent a long time finding amidst the piles of props. Especially for the action of lifting the skirt, I repeatedly adjusted the hand posture and shoulder angles to make it look less forced, while the backward glance required nailing the focus of the gaze.
Producing this kind of pink-toned girl theme with a distinct maid style is not as simple as just putting on the clothes. More importantly, it's about showcasing the character's inner tension in front of the lens. Every shutter press is a correction to the character's portrayal. I hope through this photo set, everyone can feel the unique charm of Shimoe Koharu, and also see the efforts we made to restore the character. This project is a wonderful addition to my journey in Anime-style photography.
