[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] The Red-and-White Shrine Maiden Beside Lake Tai's "Toilet Seat" Landmark

The Sheraton Huzhou Moon Hotel in the background is colloquially nicknamed the "Toilet Seat"; jokes aside, the red and white colors stood out exceptionally vividly against that massive circular structure. This shoot features Reimu Hakurei Cosplay from Touhou Project. The red-and-white shrine maiden skirt features distinct layering, with detachable white long sleeves swaying gracefully with every movement. To match the character's signature look, I styled the wig into classic brown twintails tied with an oversized bright red bow, paired with White lace socks on the feet—a very satisfying outing look for me.

Walking along the shores of Lake Tai in this outfit was quite physically demanding. The skirt hem and wide sleeves absorbed moisture from the water, becoming heavier and dragging as I walked. The afternoon lighting on the day of the shoot was rather complex; to avoid direct, blown-out harsh sunlight, we specifically chose a spot beside the railings. Considering that direct sunlight easily casts harsh facial shadows, we used a reflector to bounce soft fill light onto my cheeks and eye sockets. As gentle breezes swept over the lake, we captured several dynamic takes following the flow of the billowing skirt.

Under the blue steel bridge, the contrast was sharp. The shadows along the terminator lines defined contours nicely, though post-processing required careful handling of shadow details to ensure ambient colors didn't contaminate the crisp red-and-white tones of the dress. Posing next to that weathered, peeling mural easily evoked that feeling of breaking through the dimensional wall. The phrase "Girl praying" is deeply ingrained in the subconscious memories of a whole generation of Touhou Project fans. No overly complex techniques were needed for this set—the main key was finding backdrops that elevated the red-and-white palette. The prop was the standard Gohei; holding it facing the camera or letting it hang naturally carried a strong sense of ritual. While costume tailoring and retouching took considerable effort, waterside scenery like Lake Tai is truly ideal for Touhou cosplay sets.

The fabric chosen for the costume was slightly structured, which maintained crisp silhouette lines when folding or moving. The yellow ascot bow at the chest was made of vintage-textured fabric with subtle sheen, appearing richer in indoor or overcast conditions. The White lace socks paired with Reimu were sturdier than expected, staying in place securely without slipping down, and paired with black flats, they accentuated the leg lines nicely during movement. Standing with a hand resting casually on the foreground railing, the camera tilted slightly downward to frame the proportions of the socks and shoes perfectly.

The iconic "Toilet Seat" hotel in the background is a striking modern urban landmark; we scouted several angles so the circular geometry framed the subject from behind. The contrast lies in placing Reimu—a character inherently rooted in a fantasy-steeped realm—directly within an ultra-modern environment. Shooting under the blue bridge utilized backlighting; to keep the shot from turning pitch black, on-camera flash provided subtle front fill, while side rim-light outlined the sleeve cuffs and hair edges. The mural had faded over time, which inadvertently added authentic everyday charm to the photo, making this contrast blend together seamlessly.

Speaking of "Girl praying," it is not only synonymous with Reimu Hakurei, but also one of the most iconic theme tracks in the Touhou series. I often ponder how to visually convey that artistic mood; standing under the bridge gazing toward the extending waters served as a small personal tribute. Holding the white Gohei in hand, harmonized with the red-and-white shrine maiden outfit, brought my aura much closer to the character. Post-processing avoided excessive skin smoothing, preserving authentic skin texture while keeping the red-and-white saturation well-balanced without being harsh. The overall polish of this set—especially the waterside interplay of light and shadow—ranks among my favorite cosplay shoots of the year.
