The Anime convention floor was bustling with excitement today! To capture this set of Reimu Hakurei convention photos, I did a mountain of prep work before heading out. I curated and adjusted this outfit bit by bit myself: the red-and-white shrine maiden garments were tailored from a relatively thick, structured fabric so they hold their shape cleanly under the lights without looking limp or slouchy. The white lace trimming along the collar and the ruffled cuffs were finely detailed. The massive red bow on my head is definitely the crowning glory of the ensemble—to make sure it stood upright without flopping over, I sewed boning inside for internal support, keeping it crisp and dimensional even when walking around. For hair, I wore a deep brown long straight wig, with blunt straight bangs and slightly longer side locks that frame the face beautifully. Since the tips tangle easily, I misted them with wig conditioner and combed through repeatedly with a wide-tooth comb before leaving, ensuring a sleek, silky drape during the shoot.
For makeup, aiming to match the character's demeanor, I kept the base clean and translucent, focusing mainly on the eye makeup. Red contact lenses combined with red eyeshadow deepened the eye contours, lightly extending outward at the corners to make the gaze lively and spirited. The lipstick was a classic true red, striving for a polished, vibrant look. To ensure lasting wear, I took extra care with setting my makeup—using both setting powder and setting spray so it wouldn't melt in the stuffy convention hall. In my hand was the gohei prop: a black staff wrapped with white streamers, possessing a solid, satisfying heft when gripped and waved. The white ribbons on the prop were doubly secured with double-sided tape and stitching so they wouldn't accidentally unravel while shooting.
The most delightful part was definitely the little mini-Reimu Fumo plush in my hands. It has short gray hair tied with a red ribbon on the side of its head, and its half-lidded large red eyes give off such a delightfully lazy, derpy cuteness. Cradling it in my arms, it occupied the bottom-right corner of the frame, creating a charming contrast with me—big Reimu holding little Reimu looked utterly adorable together! During breaks between shots, I kept squeezing its plush, soft fabric; its hilarious expression actually helped me relax so much in front of the lens, easing my tension and making my poses feel more natural.
We chose a relatively open corner of the Anime convention for our shoot. Although the overhead lighting was a bit harsh, the background was reasonably tidy. Given the heavy foot traffic today, the photographer and I tested multiple angles to dodge the crowds, constantly tweaking our positions and poses. While the outfit looks stunning, all the layered fabrics and that oversized hair bow made it quite warm in the crowded hall. A slight turn or nod could easily bump into passersby, so I had to stay mindful of my movement range—keeping things poised and elegant while avoiding crowding anyone.
While discussing the shoot plan with the photographer, our main focus was highlighting the interactive bond between the character and the doll. Because the scene contained abundant red elements, we aligned on the color grading approach beforehand: pulling back the red saturation slightly to prevent color clipping while preserving natural skin tones. The overall style leaned bright and natural, looking wonderful without needing heavy editing. Throughout the shoot, we oriented my face toward available ambient light while adjusting exposure parameters to balance background brightness.
The entire shoot went smoothly, with everything from outfit nuances to prop presentation meeting my initial vision. Being able to bring little Fumo along for the shoot fulfilled a cherished wish and gave me a deeper connection to this look. Convention shoots truly put adaptability to the test; despite unpredictable lighting and crowds, these candid event photos carry an authenticity and electric atmosphere that pristine studio shoots simply can't replace. In post-production, I plan to slightly increase contrast to make the red-and-white color blocking pop, while adding a gentle glow to lean into that whimsical fantasy aesthetic. The preparation was intricate and tiring, but checking the camera playback made every ounce of effort feel completely worth it.
