This Touhou Project Reimu Hakurei Cosplay shoot was completed in a traditional Japanese garden. The moment I changed into the costume and stepped onto the wooden veranda beside the blooming cherry blossom trees, that retro Japanese aesthetic came to life instantly. The outfit featured intricate details: an oversized red-and-white lace bow, cascading ruffled layers, and delicate lace trims—looking airy and light, yet possessing substantial weight when worn. For footwear, I paired white lace ankle socks with red block heels; despite the challenges of an outdoor set, I kept the heels on throughout the walk to present the most flattering leg lines.
During shooting, the photographer used a wide aperture to blur cherry blossoms in the foreground, generating dreamy bokeh circles. Holding the purification wand (gohei) while walking along the wooden deck, the white paper streamers fluttered with every step, and set against the shrine backdrop, it felt like stepping directly into that world of fantasy. We tested various seated poses, such as turning sideways on a tatami cushion or sitting on the wooden steps with legs outstretched toward the camera, which not only showcased the texture and tiered volume of the skirt but also visually elongated the silhouette. To channel that blend of shrine maiden authority and playful charm, I continually fine-tuned my facial angles—sometimes casting a slightly downward glance, other times using subtle finger gestures to enrich the narrative depth.
This shoot took considerable time because we wanted to showcase the allure of this Wa-lolita dress from multiple perspectives. The red-and-white palette complemented the season wonderfully, with the lace texture reading exceptionally refined under diffused soft lighting. Across close-ups, environmental half-body portraits, and full-body frames, I strove to embody the character's distinct spirit. Supported by classic backdrops like tatami mats, paper screens, and cherry blossoms, the workflow was seamless. Even with the constant balancing and pose adjustments, seeing the finished frames made every effort worthwhile in this ACG outdoor location.
