Standing by the pool under the blazing sun for two hours, this Touhou Project Fantasy style ensemble finally captured the exact effect I was looking for.
This outdoor shoot took place at a guesthouse featuring a mirror pool and a grand redwood door frame, set against an expansive lake and rolling mountains in the distance. The weather on the day of the shoot was phenomenal—clear blue skies, fluffy white clouds, and intense sunlight, which serves as a double-edged sword for cosplay Outdoor photography. The upside was that natural sunlight hitting the water created crystal-clear reflections, and the sky's clouds acted as natural bounce boards. The downside was the gusty wind and dazzling sunlight, making expression control and managing stray hair strands extremely difficult.
First, let's talk about the details of this outfit. It features wide sleeves in white accented with black gradient-wash ink patterns, paired with a flared, puffy mini skirt hemline. To add visual layering, I coordinated it with white stockings and black platform shoes. For the wig, I selected light green long straight hair styled with a hair ornament. Standing under the vivid red wooden door frame, the contrast between the light green, white, and redwood was striking. In hand, I held a long-handled prop adorned with tassels and slender ornaments; while it was a bit unruly in the wind, the dynamic lines captured on camera were a delightful surprise.
The first shot utilized a centered, symmetrical composition. I stood on the wooden boardwalk facing away from the camera, extending my left hand slightly outward while gripping the prop with my right. The photographer stood directly behind me, using the red door frame as a natural frame to guide the viewer's gaze completely toward the distant lake. To capture the precise moment when the skirt and wide sleeves caught the wind, I adjusted my posture on the boardwalk several times. Because my back was to the camera, no facial expression management was required; instead, my posture felt the most relaxed—back straight, shoulders open, fully presenting the tailoring lines of the outfit and the silhouette of my back. The mirror pool flawlessly mirrored the sky and mountains beneath my feet, giving the shot a seamless, ethereal quality where water and sky blend into one.
The second shot was a candid moment while resting after getting tired. I sat sideways in the wooden pavilion nearby, facing the lake. The wooden shingles and pillars of the pavilion cast natural shadows, establishing a lovely light-and-dark contrast with the glistening lake surface in the background. The photographer captured this from a low angle on the side, just capturing the details of the White tights cosplay and shoes, alongside the natural drape and folds of the skirt hem. In this scene, with my head slightly lowered and a hand resting on the hair accessory, a quiet, tranquil atmosphere emerged.
Outdoor shoots really put the longevity of hair and makeup to the test. Sweating easily occurs under strong light, so base makeup must remain lightweight and sweat-resistant. Long wigs tend to tangle quickly in the wind outdoors, so I applied hair care spray in advance and continually combed through it between takes to ensure it looked silky and smooth on camera. The wide sleeves, while gorgeous, easily blew across my face when gusty, so I had to pinch the cuffs lightly with my fingers to steer their direction.
Although the entire shooting process was tiring, seeing the seamless fusion of light, shadow, and color in the final images made every bit of it worthwhile. A special thanks to my photographer for patient guidance, constantly tweaking camera positions under the harsh sunlight to catch so many fleeting moments. This photo set not only showcases the costume's fine details, but also beautifully weaves in the openness of the natural scenery.
