Today, I am trying on a fan-made concept design for Flandre Scarlet from Touhou Project. Styled in a classic red-and-white palette, this piece is an elaborate dress infused with a prominent Lolita aesthetic. The crimson hue of the dress boasts high saturation, while the bodice features a white ruffled bib accented by a vertical row of faux-pearl buttons and flanked by miniature red ribbon bows. An oversized red bow adorned with white lace patterns rests prominently at the waistline. The tiered, tiered-flounce skirt is engineered with sweeping volume, each tier edged with generous white lace trims and draped with miniature white bows, supported by a structured petticoat beneath to give it incredible bell-shaped fullness. Soft pink ribbon bows embellish the shoulders, and the short sleeves are finished with ruffled white lace cuffs.
To complement the ensemble, I wore a pale-blonde wig. In the second image, you can see the hair braided into a plush side plait with generous volume. The headpiece is an oversized scarlet bow trimmed with delicate white scalloped lace, echoing the motif of the waist bow. While my facial expression and makeup remain partially obscured behind the phone and props, the harmonious balance of the styling shines through. My nails were painted in a deep wine-red polish, accented by minimalist slender rings and a delicate bracelet, while cradling a soft, textured tan teddy bear. The plush bear is sized just right to veil the face while serving as a warm visual anchor for the composition.
The fitting was captured before an indoor full-length mirror. A semi-translucent white curtain in the background gently diffuses incoming natural daylight, creating a remarkably soft illumination. Framing between the curtain and the washing machine, I utilized a nearby decorative black branch rack hung with translucent, diamond-shaped prism ornaments. These pendants—glistening in blue, green, yellow, pink, and purple—cast colorful refractions that inject lively chromatic playfulness into an otherwise red-and-white frame. Mirror selfies like this are fantastic for showcasing complete sartorial silhouettes while preserving an intimate, candid charm.
When it comes to fan-made alternate concepts for Flandre, interpretations are endless. This time, I gravitated toward an ornate, sweet everyday Lolita style. Crimson channels her foundational canon essence, whereas the lavish layers of white lace and ribbons amplify textural delicacy and airy grace. To enhance cohesion, I deliberately chose a plush prop with matching tactile softness, harmonizing micro-details throughout. The essence of alternate fan concepts lies in preserving the character's signature visual cues while weaving in personal sartorial preferences and contemporary design trends.
Though this was simply an initial try-on, the garment's silhouette is wonderfully flattering: the high-waisted empire line elongates physical proportions, and despite the substantial weight of the layered flounces, the drapery falls cleanly without appearing cumbersome. The wig's fiber texture is equally smooth, and I took time to gently loosen the plait for organic, effortless volume before snapping photos. The primary goal of this fitting was to evaluate the tailoring and assess how each angle comes together in practice. Judging by these preview shots, the pre-production work achieved the exact aesthetic envisioned, aligning effortlessly with my creative standards in chromatic contrast and chiaroscuro.
