Shooting Reimu Hakurei directly at Nanshan Botanical Garden made the crowding from foot traffic the most direct challenge. To avoid the bustling crowds, we ran through almost every path in the cherry blossom garden, looking through dense flower branches for hidden corners where someone could barely stand. Through long-term shooting, I have grown used to discovering corners with excellent perspective angles but extremely cramped space, and several photos of this cosplay photoshoot were captured within these exact gaps.

Under the backlit lighting, the cherry blossom petals exuded a semi-transparent sheen, and the soft highlights just happened to obscure the cluttered tourists in the background, presenting a relatively pure sense of dreaminess in the frame. For the costume, I wore a classic modified red-and-white shrine maiden outfit. The main red-and-white tone formed a very strong visual contrast against the sea of pink blossoms. The large red bow paired with lace trim on my head was the focus of this look, and along with the red-and-white loop hair accessories on the twin tails on both sides, the overall silhouette was very distinct. The detached white lace-trimmed wide cuffs ensured that expansive movements wouldn't look bulky, and the ruffles on the skirt hem perfectly traced the dynamic range when spinning around.

Actually, when shooting this kind of character, the hardest part to master is making the movements look unforced. The atmosphere of springtime cherry blossoms naturally brings a sense of softness, so instead of adopting harsh, rigid poses, I deliberately allowed myself to relax. For instance, in the photo extending the talisman toward the lens, it wasn't about intentionally making a spell-casting action, but rather simulating the feeling of handing out a blessing prop, keeping my gaze and expression as natural and relaxed as possible. As for the close-up among the flower branches, I gently held a branch with my hand, using a large aperture for foreground blurring to turn several pink flower clusters into a hazy masking layer, capturing eye contact through the gaps in the branches.

The photographer's handling of lighting during this shoot was crucial, especially in the mottled tree shadows. They tried to choose a slight side-backlight angle, allowing hair strands and lace edges to generate highlight contours, cleanly isolating the portrait from the complex backdrop of interwoven branches. Producing photos under these light and shadow conditions makes the skin tone appear very transparent and renders the colors of the cherry blossoms softer and easier on the eyes.

Looking back at the day of the shoot, to secure the ideal lighting and scenery with fewer people, we started hair and makeup at 6:00 AM, heading straight to the area with the densest cherry blossoms as soon as the botanical garden opened. Yet even though we arrived very early, after 10:00 AM, the various main paths were still packed with tourists admiring the blossoms. As a result, many final photos were taken with me standing very high up or bending over near the soil at the roots of the flower trees. Although my body was a bit exhausted, because the costume colors and the environment matched exceptionally well this time, the overall photography efficiency was faster than expected. While this kind of catch-as-catch-can outdoor portrait shoot is tiring, seeing the pairing of the sea of flowers and the red-and-white shrine maiden in the camera playback makes it all feel very worthwhile.
