The crowds at the Firefly ACG Expo were even more overwhelming than imagined, but the moment I walked into the venue wearing this black-and-white layered ruffled maid outfit, all the crowding transformed into a unique convention atmosphere.

This time I cosplayed Cheshire Maid from Azur Lane. A lot of thought went into the details of the entire costume. The black straps, the lace choker at the collar, the layers of pleats on the skirt hem, and the ruffled detached sleeves on the arms, combined with the short silver-gray wig with blue-green highlights, made the overall effect very accurate to the character. The wig used a short silver-gray style, and because of Cheshire's iconic blue-green highlights, I used a brush with hair wax for partial coloring. This presents a gradient effect in the sunlight, giving it more layers than a solid-colored wig. With straps, bows, and ruffles, the accumulation of various elements made putting it on and taking it off quite time-consuming.

To maintain Cheshire's energetic and slightly playful temperament, the makeup specially deepened the eye contours to make the gaze look more agile. However, the hem of this kind of maid outfit is usually quite puffy. Combined with the chunky-heeled black criss-cross strap shoes and over-the-knee white stockings, walking actually requires some core balance control. Standing all day really made my calves incredibly sore, but that's just the norm for doing cosplay at a convention.

The friend who came with me took many on-site photos, including candid shots while resting on a bench and angles kneeling on the ground to interact with the plush toy prop. The yellow plush toy in my hand is actually a small pendant, but many passing friends said it was very cute. Holding it as a prop made the frames in the lens look much more lively. Although my hand got a bit sore from carrying the plush toy all day, it really helped break the stiffness of posed shots. Some friends even left signatures on Polaroids for us as a keepsake—that instant print feeling was truly magical. Although digital cameras are very popular now, holding a physical Polaroid photo gives a greater sense of ceremony.

I also ran into another blonde friend wearing the same maid outfit this time. We took photos together in front of the glass curtain wall, and passing photographers also raised their lenses. When looking at the finished photos on the camera playback screen, I felt that the tacit understanding of cosplaying with a fellow fan is just amazing. A lot of people surrounded us during the shoot; this feeling of being watched can be a bit embarrassing at times, but mostly it's joyful.

The venue of the Firefly ACG Expo is massive, and through the huge glass curtain wall, you can see the street views of Guangzhou city and passing vehicles. Many people say anime conventions are just carnivals for normies, but for us cosplayers, being able to bring our favorite characters into reality is a very meaningful thing in itself. Although it was so crowded that it was hard to move, that's exactly where the charm of a Guangzhou Anime Convention lies.

Although this Firefly trip was exhausting, weaving through the crowds in this maid outfit and using small props to interact with passersby or photographers provided a strong sense of immersion for this maid costume photography. The wig and skirt hem got a bit messy from all the walking, but those are exactly the vivid and authentic traces of a convention scene. If there's a chance next time, I want to keep trying this style of cosplay and present my best state in front of the lens.
