[Evernight cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail: The Shadowy Record of Black and Red in the Caged Long Night

A tremendous amount of thought and effort went into this Evernight cosplay from the wig down to the accessories, and today I finally organized the finished studio photoshoot photos. The Pink wig is a soft pastel pink with fibers smoother than I imagined; the bangs were layered with care, paying special attention to the angle of wispy strands to keep them from clinging stiffly to the face. The black bow headpiece atop the head was hand-modified; the original base was slightly heavy, so I refastened the clip with hot melt glue to ensure it stayed firmly secured to the wig during shooting. For makeup, 14.2mm red contact lenses were chosen, paired with dark eyeshadow elongating the outer eye corners and a subtle sweep of dark red along the lower eyelids to give the gaze a mysterious, aloof temperament. A matte foundation was used because studio lighting is quite intense and highlighter easily looks greasy; blush and contouring were kept very sheer to maintain a fair yet lively complexion.

The layered depth of the costume was the trickiest part of this styling. The black Gothic style cosplay jacket features an asymmetrical cut with an off-the-shoulder left side and a wide white sleeve on the right, worn over a white inner neckline, a bow tie, and a small red neckerchief, requiring repeated adjustments when putting it on. The silver cross fasteners on the jacket are crafted from real metal, carrying some heft and swaying gently with movement to chime with the chains. The heart-shaped ruby pendant is the crowning touch; I specifically chose one with a delicate chain so it drapes naturally in photos, adding a visual focal point. The gloves are black fingerless leather, with stiff fabric used for the white cuffs at the wrists to hold their structure. The cut of the white shorts below was critical—neither too tight nor too loose; to accommodate the leg straps, I adjusted the tension at the upper thighs so the straps wouldn't slip when seated. The white slouch leg warmers were custom-made, with black top bows attached via Velcro for easy height adjustment; during the shoot, I repeatedly adjusted them to create even, natural folds. The black Martin boots have thick platform soles and heel height, visually elongating my proportions considerably.

This set was captured in a specialized studio with a red velvet backdrop, where the golden cage and iron chains formed a stunning Chain cage scene. While arranging the set, I squatted down to place red roses at varied heights, hiding warm-yellow fairy lights among the blossoms to cast mottled light and shadows across the metal cage when switched on. During shooting, the photographer had me try various poses: sitting leaning against the cage, holding iron chains with one hand, resting my chin while gazing into the lens, and even wrapping chains around my wrists intentionally. Since the cage space was compact, framing had to balance full-body and medium shots; Photo 4's seated pose turned out the best—legs crossed with one foot resting on the bottom bar of the cage and the other dangling naturally, clearly highlighting the contrast between the white leg warmers and Martin boots while the hand pose showcased the black gloves and white cuffs. Additionally, the mirror shot was a pleasant surprise: as I stood before a mirror fixing my wig, the photographer caught a few spontaneous shots reflecting my front profile in the mirror while showing the swallowtail design of the jacket's back hem, adding great three-dimensional depth to the outfit.

Lighting was adjusted several times during the session; the key light hit from an upper-side angle, bathing the Pink wig in a soft pink glow while avoiding harsh shadows. The red curtain and gold cage had saturated warm/red tones, so to prevent the face from looking red-cast, a diffuser board was placed in front of the camera and a reflector filled light under the jaw and neck. We tested two focal lengths: an 85mm prime lens for half-body portraits with natural bokeh, and a 35mm wide-angle lens for full-body shots to capture the expansive structural lines of the cage. In reality, the cuffs and chains of this costume easily tangled while walking, requiring pauses between takes to tidy them up. I am very satisfied with the overall atmosphere—without flowery pretension, faithfully recreating the character's intrinsic Gothic restrain and mystique. The classic palette of black, red, and white, combined with the confinement imagery of the golden cage, fits the theme of "Evernight" in Honkai: Star Rail perfectly. The greatest sense of achievement in every photoshoot is seeing the wig, makeup, and costume harmonize into a cohesive visual image before the lens; this process of bringing 2D concept art into a real living portrayal is the true magic of cosplay.
