[Hinaichigo cosplay] Reinterpreting the Vintage Fairytale of Rozen Maiden After Seventeen Years

It has been seventeen full years since I first discovered Rozen Maiden back in 2008. After all this time, I cosplayed Hinaichigo again—the very first character I ever did when entering the cosplay community. When I received this photoset, memories from my college days flooded back, making me feel that time has truly left a warm mark on my journey in cosplay.

I remember cosplaying Hinaichigo for the first time around 2008, back when I was still in college. Together with the senior girls from our school's anime club and a close friend, we put together a Rozen Maiden stage play. In those days, stage performances were a mainstream attraction at anime conventions. We crafted costumes, assembled props, and rehearsed stage blocking together with immense passion. Looking back now, the performance might have been awkward and the lines delivered poorly, but those days when we gathered out of pure love to shine as characters remain precious and deeply nostalgic.

Later, as the senior members graduated, I remained at university and became a senior myself. Around that time, a junior member from the club and I paired up as Kanaria and Hinaichigo to shoot my first formal outdoor photo set. Looking back at those old photos recently, the makeup and garment tailoring were honestly too unrefined to look at; every time the two of us see them, we burst out laughing—it was a total dark history. But that was the true face of youth and the starting point of our cosplay journey.

What touches me most is that today, seventeen years later, the junior who cosplayed Kanaria with me back then is still my best photography partner and cosplay buddy. To re-interpret Hinaichigo this time, we specifically sought out a location filled with classic vintage atmosphere: tall wooden chairs, intricate pattern wallpaper, red velvet armchairs, an antique piano with delicate lace decorations, along with that iconic pink dress featuring a large bow and white lace frills along the hem. To restore the character's temperament as much as possible, I adjusted my eye makeup technique and wig styling—golden spiral curls paired with youthful light bangs, leaning the overall makeup look toward that of a doll.

The process of Cosplay photography this time was actually quite physically demanding. I had to maintain the character's elegant and lazy demeanor while finding the best poses in front of various vintage furniture and the piano. The photographer's handling of light and shadow was also spot-on; the combination of top lighting and side-back lighting gave a lovely sheen to the dress fabric and the pink satin bow on my head. I personally really love the few shots of sitting on the chair, where the vertical striped white strapped stockings and red shoes create a striking visual focus in front of the lens. The overall mood of the photoset is mysterious and elegant.

To me, the character of Hinaichigo is not just an anime character, but an imprint of my entire youth in cosplay. From campus clubs to standing in front of the camera once again today, my understanding of the character and cosplay has evolved significantly. The fascination of cosplay lies not just in wearing a character's clothes, but in the unique experience of resonating with the character and your companions. I hope that ten years from now, when we look back at today's photos again, we will still smile warmly for this sincere passion.
