[Cheshire Cosplay] Azur Lane Lunar New Year Qipao, A Gorgeous Moment at the Convention Venue

The wearing experience of this modified red qipao is far more complex than it looks in the photos. First, in terms of pattern making, to restore the character's original traits, this outfit features a tailored fit that tightly hugs the body lines at the waist and chest. Meanwhile, the shoulders feature an off-the-shoulder design, so the entire support relies completely on the halter straps around the neck, which poses a certain test for muscle control in the neck, shoulders, and back. The fabric uses a red cloth with a velvet texture that has a good drape, paired with a large area of gold thread embroidery. The embroidered floral patterns reflect exceptionally well under the exhibition hall lights, and the surface touch feels highly exquisite. The black sheer lace splicing at the chest is a visual focal point of this costume, forming a three-layer color transition of red, white, and black with the white plush trim at the neckline and the collar.

The production of the headpiece can be called the hardest part of this entire look. White lace ruffles paired with long red streamers, plus the floral decorations on the hair bun—the entire headpiece is large in volume but well-controlled in weight, so it doesn't sag excessively when worn. The wig features a gray-purple and teal highlighted style. To coordinate with the headpiece, I did local styling fixation; thankfully, the hair volume was sufficient, and a little layer was added to the top of the head so it could withstand the test of high-angle overhead lights during shooting. The curvature of the hair strands on both sides was also meticulously adjusted, fitting perfectly with the positions of the cheeks and collarbones.

The most eye-catching accessories in this styling are undoubtedly the pair of white plush arm sleeves and the lace white over-knee stockings on the legs. The plush sleeves indeed bring a great winter Lunar New Year vibe, but to be honest, wearing this inside an indoor convention venue is extremely hot, and my forehead would sweat after just a bit of movement. However, for the sake of the contrast in the frame, this sacrifice was completely worth it. The lace edge of the white stockings has an elastic wide band, which doesn't slip off easily during the shoot no matter how I kick or make high-difficulty poses, offering great adhesion. The matching white platform high heels have red soles; standing for a long time indeed requires a lot of foot support, especially when I deliberately posed in that single-leg stance with the other leg raised high shown in the picture—the core strength must be stabilized to keep the body straight, otherwise it is very easy to lose balance.

The shooting environment at the convention venue was actually very cluttered; various stands, lightboxes, and other attendees could be clearly seen in the background. To capture this clean and dramatically conflicting black background effect, the photographer used strong overhead lighting and front fill light on-site to strip the character silhouette away from the messy background. During the shoot, I deliberately turned my back to the rows of spotlights on the ceiling, allowing the light to strike a beautiful ring of rim light along the lace edges of the headpiece, paired with the obstruction of a fan or the plush sleeves to create light and dark levels on the face. The entire process required constantly adjusting my position and body rotation angles to avoid shadows from the venue, taking several rounds of shutter clicks to finally select these parts where the angles and states were quite ideal.

This set of photos actually did not rely heavily on composition and filter special effects; it mainly depended on the restoration of the costume material texture via pre-lighting. Especially in the texture presentation of the red-bottomed white shoes, plush sleeves, and stockings, the high-contrast light and shadow perfectly presented the complex details on the clothes to the fullest. Producing this work was mainly to share a new look during the Lunar New Year period that can showcase character traits while holding Eastern charm. Although the entire process of changing, shooting, and adjusting was arduous, ultimately, under the snapshots of the photographer at the convention venue, the charm of this modified qipao and the original temperament of the character were blended beautifully, and I am very satisfied with the presented gloss and overall styling.
