Regarding this set of dark Gothic style Hatsune Miku look, the scene setup and lighting were actually entirely serving those glowing butterfly headphones. Before the shoot, I discussed the overall color palette with the makeup artist @江东芳心纵火犯, and we ultimately decided to highlight the character through the contrast of warm and cool lights against a rich, dark red background. The posture of glancing back was selected after several attempts, because it can beautifully display the profile contour while letting the butterfly wings on the headphones become the visual anchor point of the entire frame from the back side.
In terms of hair and makeup, Hatsune Miku's teal twin tails are a classic trait, and the stylist fluffed up the wig during processing to make the sense of layering richer. That small black top hat on the head is paired with a ring of white lace, forming a top-to-bottom echo with the black-and-white lace patchwork at the waist. This kind of Gothic-style accessory slightly increases the head's presence, so during the shoot, I adjusted the hat's angle several times to ensure it wouldn't be blocked in low-angle shots.
The costume selects a black tube top, which wonderfully displays the shoulder and neck lines. In a dark light environment, although black clothing easily merges into the background, it precisely matches the mystery of the Gothic theme. The semi-transparent black lace gloves worn on the hands have some slight raw edges, and this delicate texture looks highly vivid in close-ups. The layering of this match primarily reflects in the contrast between the black-and-white lace and the blue-green hair color, completely free of over-complex piling up.
The core prop is absolutely that pair of glowing butterfly headphones with wings. It is not only part of the character image but also serves a role in fill lighting. The pink-purple glow emitted by the headphones illuminated the dark parts of my profile and neck, creating a highly attractive rim light in the dark environment. When shooting this photo, I adjusted the direction of a strand of hair beside my cheek, letting it naturally slide down along the headphones so that the light carries a translucent feel when hitting the strands.
Regarding makeup, to complement the elf-like atmosphere, the base makeup was beaten quite white and clean, with the emphasis placed on reinforcing the eye contours. The ice-blue colored contacts make the gaze look much clearer, and the rhinestone sequin adorned below the left eye is the finishing touch—it looks like a frozen tear, making the gaze appear more focused and blurred. Low-saturation dark colors were used for the eyeshadow base to avoid clashing with the purple light. The entire makeup pursues a clean and refreshing cool tone, avoiding a heavy appearance.
In terms of photography, the photographer Aki and the post-processing editor Bkaaaaa left immense creative space for us. During the shoot, a large aperture was utilized to blur the roses and golden picture frame edges in the background, letting the deep red atmosphere be preserved without overtaking the main subject. Post-processing didn't over-smooth the skin, keeping the skin textures and the wig's strand definitions, which gives the photos more of a portrait photography quality.
In fact, when shooting this kind of theme full of light effects, the hardest part is balancing the relationship between facial exposure and the headphones' self-illumination. If the ambient light is too bright, the headphones' glowing effect will weaken, losing its protagonist aura; but if the environment is too dark, the face won't receive sufficient illumination, and the skin tone will look dim. We attempted to adjust the direction of the main light source multiple times, finally deciding to use a slightly distant softbox to cast a side-backlight, which beautifully illuminated my face right at the glance back, while not completely devouring the headphones' glow.
Looking back at these final images, although it is merely a simple backward glance, it contains the clever thoughts of hair and makeup, the photographer's lighting, post-processing color grading, and various micro-adjustments during wearing. Every single detail serves as a support for the final frame. Maintaining the character's three-dimensionality while perfectly integrating the glowing mechanical wing elements is exactly the unique visual impression we want to present. This set of photos records a flash of the character within a specific atmosphere, and serves as an interpretation of another style regarding this classic figure. I hope such a dark style cosplay and dreamy visual presentation lets the audience feel an atmospheric vibe completely different from daily life through this anime-style photography work.
