Shooting Ruan Mei from Honkai: Star Rail during an Outdoor photoshoot in the dog days of summer felt like the air itself had solidified right after stepping out from the studio segment. Today's surface temperature was overwhelming; photographer @Jiubishiliu and I spent a long time scouting camera angles in the park under the blazing sun. We originally planned to shoot later in the afternoon when sunlight softened, but outdoor shoots present too many uncontrollable variables. For a cosplayer wearing wigs and heavy styling outdoors, extreme heat is a formidable test of physical endurance.

Before heading out, I prepared thoroughly against heatstroke. Although this outfit is designed to feel relatively cool—relying primarily on a backless cut and blue-and-white fabric paneling to capture her demeanor—wearing wigs and accessories under direct sunlight remains stifling. The 3D floral headpiece was crafted from mesh and cloth art for rich dimensionality, but keeping hair intact once secured meant enduring trickling sweat. What draws me most to this Chinese-style cosplay ensemble is its backless cutout strap design paired with 3D petal adornments along the cuffs, oozing classical elegance. Meanwhile, the blue-and-white folding fan served not only as a primary prop but also as a makeshift sunshade during breaks.

I chose Ruan Mei because her gentle yet aloof aura harmonizes wonderfully with classical architecture featuring green foliage and wooden corridors. The outfit's palette centers around clean white and refreshing light blue; overlapping wrap cuts from chest to waist combined with back straps accentuate body proportions gracefully. The outfit itself is reasonably comfortable—lacking heavy armor or bulky layers—though the fabric easily clings with sweat under high temperatures, requiring extra care before shooting.

The photographer was extraordinarily dedicated today, exploring various angles to capture optimal lighting—such as the fluid motion of fanning the folding fan or natural eye contact while looking back over a shoulder. In studio settings, these gestures are straightforward to control, but maintaining relaxed facial expressions and fluid movements under scorching outdoor heat demands true willpower. In fact, while capturing Photo 3—turning toward the camera with a slight body tilt—I was nearly on the verge of heat exhaustion. Yet reviewing the play of light and shadow in the viewfinder made every hardship completely worthwhile.

Under this natural light setting, the captured texture possesses a quality that strobe lighting and studio shoots can rarely replicate. Lush green trees and wooden corridors produced stunning bokeh in the background, seamlessly blending the figure into the environment. However, shooting bright blue-and-white attire with high contrast requires precise light ratio control, as overexposure can easily occur. Thankfully, the photographer exercised restraint during post-processing color grading, avoiding over-retouching facial features to preserve skin translucency and authentic fabric texture in our Anime-style photography.

As the shoot drew to a close, we rested under a large tree for a long while. Every outdoor location shoot brings unforeseen challenges—hair ruffled by winds or sweat requiring constant makeup touch-ups. Yet seeing these finished photos yields an irreplaceable sense of fulfillment. The blue and white palette conveys a touch of warmth amidst serene cool tones, making it deeply captivating. Meanwhile, pink floral accents on the headpiece preserve her signature mystique while adding an inviting touch of softness.
