[Umaru cosplay] Himouto! Umaru-chan: Returning to the Coziest State of Staying at Home and Gaming - Image 1

When shooting this Himouto! Umaru-chan cosplay, I paid special attention to capturing her sense of everyday coziness. Umaru's biggest charm lies in how radiant she is in public, while turning into a slacker obsessed with games and snacks at home. To express this feeling, I chose to sit directly on the floor holding a controller, as this posture is the most relaxed and immersive.

As for the costume, the oversized orange animal cloak is the soul of the look. With its thick fabric and plush texture, the cloak not only perfectly recreates the character's iconic image but also appears wonderfully full in photos, giving an endearing, fluffy visual effect. To match this stay-at-home vibe, I paired it with red shorts and white knee-high socks underneath, which added layers of color while highlighting the character's leg lines and lively, cute silhouette. To keep my hands from feeling empty, I held a black-and-white controller, completely immersing myself in the character.

Aside from the outfit, the biggest highlight of this shoot was the use of props. The small plush dolls scattered around the frame, wearing matching little orange hats, echoed the main subject nicely and filled out the composition. They acted like Umaru's little companions, making the whole scene lively and playful. I deliberately chose a clean, pure white background so that the vibrant pop of orange would become the sole visual focal point, accentuating the character's innate cuteness.

Post-processing for this shoot was handled by retoucher Chikao Boluomi. In color grading, attention was paid to preserving the purity of the white while slightly adjusting the brightness and saturation of the orange to create a warm, sun-kissed tone, enhancing the airy feel of my light blonde wig. The retoucher also patiently refined the wig edges and fabric wrinkles, elevating the overall texture to create a bright and healing atmosphere.

Cosplay is more than just putting on a costume; it is about conveying the character's unique soul through body language, expressions, props, and setting. What Himouto! Umaru-chan teaches us is that even if you are imperfect and lazy at times, you can still live your life in an utterly adorable way. I am truly happy to present all these details before the camera.

For this shoot, I specially prepared a medium-length, soft light blonde wig, using a curling iron to add natural loose curls at the ends. This framed my face nicely and stayed true to Umaru's everyday look. The orange cloak was slightly heavier and much larger than expected; wearing it on a petite frame like mine created an even cuter wrapped-up look.

During the shoot, the photographer and I discussed many subtle details about poses and expressions. For instance, holding the controller needed a gentle touch rather than a tight grip, with fingers slightly relaxed—looking as if I was executing fast moves on screen while remaining calm on the surface. The hood had to be pulled up just right, neither obstructing my eyes nor falling back, framing my face to create a soft, squishy appearance. Arranging the plushies around also took some thought: perching some on shoulders, placing some at my feet, and tucking others behind created a scattered layout that kept the shot dynamic and steeped in a carefree Otaku girl's daily life vibe.

Since I aimed for a clean and refreshing feel, we shot in a studio with a white backdrop. A white background tests color coordination: the combination of orange, red, white, and touches of black pops vividly and lends itself well to clean post-production. Thanks to the retoucher, the texture of the plushies and the cloak looks extraordinarily soft, and the scene is free from distracting noise with great clarity, perfectly capturing the spirit of Himouto! Umaru-chan—energetic yet delightfully lazy even at home.

Every time I do cosplay, I love exploring the character's unique traits, and this shoot was no exception. Umaru has a special charm: she is not only a pro gamer, but also a pampered little sister who loves being looked after. During the shoot, I tried to capture that unapologetically playful, mischievous expression. Happiness is simple—just like Umaru, savoring the moment in her own little sanctuary. Slipping into this outfit felt like returning to those carefree, snack-filled afternoons at home, spending the day in the coziest way possible. The hood's design, with its big ears and simple smiley face, softens your mood the second you put it on, creating a state of pure, effortless bliss.
