[Ellen Joe cosplay] Zenless Zone Zero Outdoor Shoot: No Biting Today, Just Catching the Breeze

At 4 PM in Zhanjiang, the sunlight still had a piercing bite to it. Even before dusk, the rays struck the metal railings with intense contrast. After discussing with my photographer, we decided to capture the casual, everyday side of Ellen Joe from Zenless Zone Zero using purely natural light outdoors.

The wardrobe centered on a sharply tailored white button-down shirt paired with a high-waisted dark pleated skirt, accessorized with a black leather choker. To faithfully recreate the character, I preserved the black blunt bangs alongside her signature red highlight streaks. The metallic hairpins on either side of the face served as the finishing touch. For makeup, I deepened the red-orange blending around the eyes and wore bold red lips, aiming to evoke that languid yet dangerous shark-like temperament—though today, she probably doesn't feel like biting anyone, just quietly taking in the breeze.

Lighting is always the most unpredictable variable during an outdoor shoot. While 4 PM sunlight is harsh, hitting my profile and shirt at an angle, it precisely carved out facial contours and the textured folds of the fabric. To stay true to character, I tested several distinct poses: leaning forward over the railing daydreaming, resting crossed arms along the balustrade while locking eyes with the lens, or leaning back against the bars with one hand on my hip and head tilted back. Every movement required calibrating physical tension—neither too limp nor too rigid. For the frame with my head raised, the blinding glare almost made it impossible to keep my eyes open, yet I fought to hold a steady, resolute expression to preserve that quiet conviction on camera. I adore this ensemble's styling: minimalist yet full of dimension. The fluid drape of the pleated skirt contrasts crisply against the structured shirt, while the cold, industrial metal railing subtly echoes her personal aesthetic. Though the harsh sun and gusts yielded plenty of discarded takes, capturing this alternative side of Ellen Joe made it entirely worthwhile.

The location was a semi-open platform in Zhanjiang, framed by modern architectural glass curtain walls, geometric lines, and distant greenery—an urban aesthetic that seamlessly fit her character design. Throughout the shoot, continuous gusts kept whipping the red-streaked tips of my hair, adding dynamic motion to the frames. I stayed in constant communication with the photographer to seize unscripted, fleeting instances—such as sweeping back stray strands or zoning out into empty space. We avoided overly complex actions this time, prioritizing Ellen Joe's nonchalance outside of combat. With the white shirt sleeves casually rolled up and the black pleated skirt swaying gently in the breeze, finished with complementary footwear and socks, the styling stayed clean and sharp. Even though the prop in hand was conceptual, that leisurely ambiance was more than enough. People often ask whether outdoor shoots are exhausting; preparing the attire, styling wigs, and perfecting makeup demand immense dedication at every step. Yet when you stand before the lens, feeling the sunlight, wind, and temperature seamlessly merge into the character, everything proves deeply rewarding. This set eschewed heavy CGI effects and convoluted retouching, relying instead on raw chiaroscuro and authentic on-site interaction.
