[Diluc Cosplay] Mondstadt's Red-Haired Knight: Dark Night Blade and Iron Chains

Regarding these Convention client photos for Mondstadt's red-haired knight, we utilized four distinct sets to present his character. Dark-backdrop chain close-ups, a claymore resting on ground with composited volcanic lava, props held under dark red velvet drapes, and candid still-life shots in a study room—using contrasting lighting and backgrounds to fit the multifaceted nature of this character.

Let's start with this red and black costume. The outfit combines glossy patent leather and matte leather panels, where shoulder armor and silver arm appliques must remain rigid to avoid unsightly creasing under camera lenses. To complement this Red hair styling wig, my makeup artist and I spent time adjusting the inner wig cap and layering the front bangs. Since the character's original hairstyle has intricate fringe layers, improper placement can easily look bulky or cover the eyes. The wig strands reflect differently between warm indoor lighting and cool outdoor light; to prevent tangling during the shoot, my wig stylist smoothed it out after every set of poses.

As for props, the massive claymore and iron chains were the most demanding elements of the entire shoot. The heavy claymore required precise leverage points when swinging or holding poses to prevent visible hand tremors. The black chains were genuinely heavy, and in the black-backdrop shots, rendering their metallic texture and natural gravitational drape was crucial. However, wearing chains across my arms and neck required constant vigilance against pulling too tight, as direct metal-on-skin contact easily leaves red marks over long shooting sessions. Then there was the dagger with blue feather accents—biting down on it for poses meant avoiding tooth contact with metal edges while maintaining a cold, detached gaze.

Lighting was paramount for the dark-backdrop set. With a pure black background, standard lighting would cause the red hair to bleed into the dark clothing. The photographer used sharp rim lighting on my face and along the edges of the wig to cleanly detach the red hair layers, while casting crisp specular highlights across the patent leather surface to make the red-and-black palette feel rich rather than flat. The volcanic lava scene in Figure 3 was composited during post-processing from an original shot on gray-white gravel ground; environmental fire splashes were added based on my body orientation. Executing this pose required kneeling on one knee while aligning my line of sight precisely with the blade's edge, alongside positioning the sword's angle into the ground to ensure consistent lighting direction in post.

In the indoor study and red velvet curtain sets, the mood shifted completely. The vibe in Figure 6—biting the dagger while reading a book—required looking relaxed yet subtly scrutinizing. I intentionally adjusted my wrist posture so the black leather gloves under warm light resonated with the deep red tones of the background books. The metallic chains and rivets on the gloves were the most detail-sensitive elements; if these tiny accessories tilted even slightly during close-ups, fixing them in post-processing would prove tedious.

The entire session spanned several hours of continuous outfit tweaks and makeup touch-ups. While the red hair looks striking, once the back tail gets pressed or tangled, smoothing it takes effort. Furthermore, red contact lenses worn under bright lighting for hours cause dryness, requiring eye drops between scene transitions. Though grueling, seeing the cold toughness of iron chains intersect with fiery red hair in the final images achieved the texture we aimed for.

Cosplaying this character, the greatest challenge wasn't the physical posing, but using makeup and gaze intensity to carry his signature aloofness and intimidating aura in Cosplay photography. I hope everyone enjoys this client showcase.
