Today's set of photos revolves around the character setting of Kochiya Sanae from Touhou Project. Although this isn't my first time cosplaying this series, completing an outdoor shoot during the cherry blossom season always brings a completely unique freshness. The gentle spring lighting is particularly forgiving and friendly for costumes with complex color layering.
This outfit's structure heavily tests one's familiarity with wearing it. First, the costume is split into an inner piece and an outer mantle. The white upper fabric is accented with large areas of dark blue pattern lace, which, combined with a lacing waist-cincher design, requires careful adjustment when wearing to achieve a crisp, natural waistline. The most striking element is the sleeve design: both sleeves adopt wide flared bell shapes, integrating stacked layers of white fabric with light green ruffled paneling and dark patterned ribbons along the inner side. During the shoot, learning how to utilize arm raises and swings to control the gravity and shape of the sleeves so they spread out gracefully in mid-air became key to mastering the visual frame.
The prop consists of a long staff topped with ornaments featuring blue scraps, star patterns, and white accents, connected below to numerous light blue ribbons. This prop easily tangles when descending, so in the seconds before pressing the shutter each time, we had to carefully smooth out the ribbons' flow. Complemented by the gentle breeze on set that day, these ribbons naturally formed dynamic extension lines under both low-angle and high-angle camera positions. Regarding shooting angles, we specifically experimented with a low-angle upward perspective, which resulted in the final full-body shot showcasing the overall silhouette. This angle beautifully elongates leg lines while maximizing the visual presence of the wide sleeves. Since the upper body features necklines and chest lace decorations, this upward perspective also lends a lofty, sacred atmosphere derived from the character lore itself, creating a striking color contrast of pink against green, white, and blue alongside a vibrant row of cherry blossom trees in full bloom behind me. The photographer provided solid guidance, reminding me to keep my shoulders relaxed and avoid straining my back stiffly when lifting my arms.
For post-processing, we focused on unifying environmental colors and preserving skin texture. Since the cherry blossom grove inherently casts diffuse pink light, we refrained from forcibly eliminating the warm color temperature brought by the ambient light, feeling that this overall soft color tone matched the temperament of a spring living god. The skirt structure is quite complex, featuring a dark blue lace outer skirt layered above a extending light green train at the back. The skirt's rich layering truly shines when walking or when caught in a gentle breeze. To capture dynamic fluidity, we took numerous continuous action shots, ultimately selecting the single frame with the most beautifully extended posture.
This outdoor location record differs significantly from previous studio shoots. Studio lighting sharply highlights costume structures, but outdoor natural light bestows garments with genuine texture and luminosity. By controlling exposure parameters and aperture size, the background cherry blossoms produced soft bokeh, making the foreground character stand out even more visually. Waiting for light transitions served as valuable time to bond with the character's inner attributes, allowing myself to naturally adopt this dignified yet nimble posture. Every shoot is not merely a process of pressing the shutter, but a lesson in re-interpreting outfit, environment, and lens interaction. Learning how to prevent wide sleeves from covering the face in the wind, keeping ribbons in a graceful curve during spins, or adjusting posture in light-colored Stocking outfit under slightly high or eye-level angles—these details are experiences accumulated through trial and error on set. The final result is a collective effort of the team and a tribute to the world of Touhou Project itself in this Anime cosplay endeavor.
