Today happens to be the 20th Anniversary of the broadcast of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. At this highly commemorative milestone, we successfully completed this photoshoot that carries countless anime youth memories, feeling as though the entire shooting process was endowed with a special sense of ritual. Huge thanks to my photographer, Yongzhe, who always manages to accurately capture the specific charm of the character. Our assistant, Youhuang, also relied on an extreme slide-tackle coordination to help us quickly change scenes and pass props within a tight schedule, maximizing the efficiency of this shoot.

What I enjoyed most about this shoot was the process of getting fully geared up and entering the character's state. The core visual focus of this ensemble is the classic North High sailor school uniform outfit and the striking red armband on the left arm. For a high level of accuracy, we put a lot of thought into the details, specifically recreating the signature orange headband characteristic of that era, the dark red bow at the neckline, and carefully preparing the highly recognizable black lettering on the armband. With a pure white shirt and bright blue pleated skirt as the main colors, paired with black over-the-knee socks and traditional brown loafers, this standard school style immediately maxes out the sense of youth and vitality. Add to that the indispensable bright yellow megaphone in hand, club flyers used for recruiting, and even the classic action of rushing out the door with a slice of bread in my mouth—these concrete props instantly physicalize that rule-breaking soul filled with leaps of thought.

The outdoor location for this shoot was selected at a stadium stand near a campus and a cherry blossom grove. Although the weather that day turned out to be cloudy to overcast with a heavy gray tone in the sky, it was unexpectedly very suitable for the color scheme of this uniform. The natural, soft diffused light effectively avoided harsh shadow dead zones, making the skin tones look warmer and gentler, while allowing the bright blue, white, and red colors on the clothes to retain a strong color contrast against the environment. During the shoot, I intentionally simulated two states: one was briefly spacing out among the open stands, and the other was cooperating with the photographer to hold the big megaphone and promotional flyers, striking dynamic frozen poses with a sense of calling. With the camera always at hand, I was ready to record those whimsical moments at any time.

As an enthusiast who has been doing anime cosplay for many years, I've always felt that capturing a character well relies not just on costume recreation, but more importantly on capturing that unique temperament deep within the soul. This time, I want to express special gratitude to the original animation work for creating this classic school story twenty years ago. Although the entire story has been long past on the timeline, as long as I stand in front of the lens in this outfit and lift that yellow megaphone, that unconstrained emotion full of passion naturally drives my entire state of mind. Hope this set of photos is not just a reshaping of the appearance, but can also convey the character's unique flamboyance and persistence. Being able to leave this set of works as a memento at this special milestone can be considered staying true to the original aspiration of this passion.
