For this Cirno shoot, I put together an outfit channeling an effortless, everyday summer vibe. Shedding the bulky ice crystal wings, I switched into a breezy white sundress and a distressed straw hat. For the diamond-shaped wings on my back, I intentionally chose an iridescent holographic laser material that refracts diverse colors under sunlight, allowing me to preserve her ice fairy identity while keeping the visual presence light and airy rather than cumbersome.
The shooting location took place along an alleyway in an old town district. Weathered, peeling walls, vintage outdoor air conditioning units, and vibrant green climbing vines formed an intriguing stylistic juxtaposition against Cirno's fairy nature. Wearing a strap sundress in sweltering weather felt exceptionally comfortable, though the wig and straw hat still raised the perceived temperature quite a bit.
Collaborating with photographer @TropicalFish was an absolute delight. We scouted numerous natural camera positions through the alley, steering clear of harsh direct sunlight and capitalizing on the soft diffuse bounce from the plaster walls. One shot features leaning against the wall and peeking my head out, utilizing a wide aperture to melt the background into soft blur and lock the visual weight onto my facial expression and gaze. Another captures me strolling down the center of the lane with arms slightly raised, perfectly framing the wing props behind to create a lively, roaming narrative through the heritage quarter.
Crafting the props actually took considerable ingenuity. Instead of traditional thick acrylic or EVA foam, the back wings were constructed with translucent holographic foil mounted onto clear acrylic sheets and secured to the dress with Velcro. Walking along, shifting the wings slightly created radiant reflections, and their lightweight build made strolling through outdoor locations completely effortless.
On the makeup front, to complement the blue-gray wig, I deliberately used cool-toned eyeshadow paired with an orange-tinted lip for warmth, preventing the cool hair color from making me look washed out. The eye makeup was kept immaculate, accentuating the lashes and crisp eyeliner, since retaining fine detail under wide-aperture lenses is essential.
Outdoor shoots invariably encounter uncontrollable elements—sudden drafts through the alley or curious local residents passing by—yet these quirks represent the true joy of practical location work. The color grading in post-processing was pushed toward a crisp, translucent finish, preserving that golden summer sunlight. I hope everyone enjoys this refreshing, unconventional interpretation of our beloved ice fairy.
