The finished photoshoot of Phoebe from Wuthering Waves is finally ready! Let's dive into the anime-inspired color grading and shooting details. For the first two photos, I deliberately experimented with an anime-like grading palette. To achieve that 2D visual effect, I pushed the blues toward cyan and shifted the greens toward a vibrant emerald, making the overall image look clearer and more vivid. The core of this grading approach lies in minimizing heavy shadows: I significantly lifted the dark areas and softened the harsh chiaroscuro contrast of traditional photography, flattening the lighting slightly so the palette and illumination harmonize into an anime-like finish.
Preparing the outfit and props was also a highlight of this shoot. Phoebe's costume is packed with intricate elements: a predominantly white base adorned with gold trim and black lace, blending elegance with an air of mystery. The oversized white domed slouch hat is the visual centerpiece; because its fabric has a noticeable sheen, I had to constantly adjust my angle under intense outdoor sunlight to prevent blown-out highlights while utilizing it to catch a clean rim light. The flowing blue shoulder ribbons and golden tassel accessories shimmered in the sun, adding tremendous depth to the ensemble. Though the staff wasn't overly heavy, maintaining fluid, weightless gestures still required quite a bit of arm strength.
For posing, I aimed to convey the character's lively, spirited charm. In the first shot, I took a frontal stance with one leg slightly lifted, holding the staff in one hand while touching the hat with the other to showcase the lines of the skirt and tall boots. For the third and fourth photos, I perched sideways on an outdoor stone balustrade; this angle naturally accentuated leg lines, clearly presenting the white Stockings and the dark branch-like patterning on the thigh while leveraging perspective to elongate visual proportions. The sunlight was gorgeous, filtering through the foliage to blend with the emerald greenery and post-graded anime colors for a mesmerizing, dimension-crossing feel.
To complement the fantasy aesthetic, we specifically chose a location featuring European-style carved stone balustrades—the solid stonework paired with the ornate dress prevented the composition from feeling flimsy. The sun was rather glaring on set, and keeping my eyes wide without squinting took conscious focus facing into the light. Seeing the translucent lighting, vivid colors, and game-accurate 2D texture in the final cuts, however, made every moment under the blazing sun and every ache from holding the staff completely worth it. Nailing this cosplay wasn't just about putting on the costume, but about channeling the character's true spirit through expression and visual storytelling.
