Shooting this set centered around Phoebe, from makeup trial to stepping into the studio, was actually much more tedious than imagined. Wanting to create a dreamy yet cool magic atmosphere overall, I made some choices in outfit coordination and pose design. The iconic large white hat is extremely eye-catching, but its sheer volume and stability were key challenges to overcome. Wearing it required utilizing an internal frame to prop up the edges to maintain visual crispness, while trying to avoid it tilting due to large movements during the shoot. The main costume's black-and-white color-blocked design, plus gold trim and blue tassel decorations, offers rich layering. In particular, the bright blue drape and small metal bells at the waist gently sway as I walk, adding dynamic imagination to static frames. The cropped midriff-baring top paired with white tights and a black-and-white striped skirt hem really tests body curve control, but fortunately, the white high boots complement leg shape nicely, making overall proportions look more slender.
Speaking of props this time, the long staff in hand is the absolute core, featuring intricate gold patterns and a dark shaft. When holding it, the center of gravity must be controlled properly; otherwise, it easily looks clumsy. When shooting squatting poses—like the cover photo everyone might see—I deliberately adjusted the staff's tilt angle so it formed a visual diagonal line with my body's lines, giving the frame greater tension. Meanwhile, to balance the heavy feel of this gear, I kept my facial expression relaxed and detached, avoiding exaggerated emotional expressions, hoping to convey a wizard costume's unique sense of mystery and composure through the lens.
For the dreamy backdrop, I really need to give special thanks to the team. They covered the steps with large areas of light blue and white artificial flowers, paired with white Roman pillars and a crystal chandelier in the back, constructing a very pure, translucent visual space. This actually placed extremely high demands on early lighting setup, opting for large-area high-key soft light to avoid heavy shadows in the environment. This lighting technique made the entire frame look light and luminous. On the day of the shoot, I was exhausted because there were so many accessories—from adjusting the hat's angle to tidying waist tassels, every pose change required spending time to rearrange everything. Though the white thigh-highs outfit with boots looked wonderful, climbing up and down steps required extreme caution to prevent snagging.
Although the process was grueling, seeing that cool, pure atmosphere preserved beautifully in the final photos made every bit of effort completely worth it. While organizing photos, I particularly loved clean compositions with the subject centered, free from complex background clutter to better highlight garment texture and demeanor. To me, this set served as a successful attempt at blending magic elements with a cool-toned aesthetic in Cosplay photography. From costume and prop design to light and shadow application in actual shooting, to considerations in final selection, every step deepened my understanding of cosplay. This creative experience—staying true to original designs while expressing personal style—is the most precious part of every shoot.
