While preparing for this Blue Archive Misaki cosplay photo set, we originally planned to use an indoor studio shoot to ensure controllable lighting and a clean background. However, during location scouting, we unexpectedly discovered this outdoor rooftop platform high up in the city. The huge orange geometric steel frame structure behind it was incredibly eye-catching, and its strong modern industrial feel clashed with the cool-toned dark blue satin Qipao I was wearing, creating unexpected visual tension. Therefore, we temporarily decided to change the main scene to an outdoor night shoot.
The costume itself retained very distinct character signature elements. The dark navy satin material has a wonderful drape and luster, reflecting an underwater-like chilling sheen when light hits it. The side of the waist features gold-thread dragon embroidery patterns, outlining a very three-dimensional, gorgeous feel. The halter-neck and sleeveless design placed high demands on the shoulder and necklines. To maintain smooth lines, we repeatedly adjusted the tightness and position of the halter strap during wear—not too tight to leave indentation marks, and not too loose to shift. The silver-grey crescent hair ornament on top of the head was another challenge; it needed to be fixed to one side of the bun with hidden clips, ensuring it wouldn't tilt under different camera angles while making sure it wouldn't be blown away by the wind.
The lower body coordination was the centerpiece of this look. Black flat-bottomed base shorts, translucent-textured Black stockings, and black patent leather high heels formed a complete lower-body visual language. The black stockings feature very clear texture details, and paired with high heels, they elongated the visual proportions of the calves. Especially for sitting or kneeling shooting angles like these, the textural contrast between the black stockings and patent leather high heels can exceptionally extend the visual length of the legs.
Throughout the shoot, we utilized black metal railings and grayish-white concrete ground as background carriers, trying out various postures. For instance, standing with hands naturally resting on the railing, leaning the body slightly backward to form an S-curve through weight shifting; or kneeling on both knees with one hand gently touching the collar, a moment requiring simultaneous balance of arm undulation angles and upper body uprightness, as any slouching would severely compromise the overall aura; there was also a set capturing one foot raised while holding a high-heeled shoe, a pose posing a massive test on balance. To stabilize my center of gravity, we shot multiple takes before finding the most natural and non-stiff feel.
The character naturally carries a steady, composed sense of oppression. This aura not only exists in the attire but also needs to be conveyed through micro-expressions. In front of the lens, I deliberately controlled my facial muscles, keeping the corners of my mouth flat without lifting them, and my gaze slightly focused just below the center of the lens to project a casual yet in-control-of-everything look. The night breeze occasionally brushing stray hairs across my cheek paradoxically added a dynamic sense of breath to the static frame.
The lighting for this night shoot relied primarily on front high-frequency strobes and ambient background light. The photographer's flash intensity was controlled quite precisely, suppressing background highlights to prevent overexposure while ensuring clear, translucent skin tones. The cool blue clothes and warm orange background light formed a classic warm-cool contrast color scheme. In post-processing, we only slightly adjusted contrast without using filters to excessively alter color temperature, preserving the authentic nighttime texture as much as possible.
Actually, the wind was quite strong on the shooting day, blowing the long wig ponytail around frequently, forcing us to pause and use a comb to reset the texture. However, the grey-striped suit jacket hanging on the railing provided an unexpected compositional inspiration—originally just a prop casually hung aside by the wardrobe assistant, it turned out in the viewfinder to perfectly fill the lower-left weight balance of the frame, adding a touch of story extension to a composition otherwise centered purely on the subject.
The entire shoot took a few hours from start to finish, during which I wore high heels while moving across different overpass steps and grid ground, requiring significant muscle support from the soles of my feet and knees. However, seeing the crisp costume details in the final photos, the even sheen on the stockings, and the cold, elegant aura of the character restored, all the fatigue made it entirely worthwhile.
