Holding a lantern and broom while studying the lighting across the warehouse set, the temperature dropped just right for shooting. For this Touhou Project Marisa Kirisame cosplay session, we did extensive homework on the finer details. Organizing the costume and wig took a long time; pairing Black stockings with the dress was intended to capture the character's signature aura as a free-spirited Witch and Magical Girl, especially the lace trimming on the brim of the hat, which required repeated styling spray adjustments to achieve its fluffy, crisp volume.
When capturing the levitating apple shot, to facilitate clean post-production compositing, we repeatedly tested the apple's falling trajectory, tossing it dozens of times before capturing the moment where light and shadow aligned naturally. Setting up the library scene also took great care—arranging vintage desk lamps and books, combined with foreground bokeh blur, gave the entire composition a deeply rich texture.
To faithfully express the character's uninhibited, adventurous nature, the photographer deliberately scheduled the shoot during dusk and nightfall. This allowed us to leverage fading natural ambient light while using a single handheld lantern as our key light, adjusting the lampshade to calibrate directional angles and color temperature. The angle of the light source was paramount: direct frontal lighting would flatten facial depth, whereas using warm yellow side lighting to highlight facial contours against the dark blue backdrop produced that mesmerizing magical atmosphere.
Navigating through the woods in a heavy dress was genuinely exhausting, and capturing the fluttering flare of the skirt hem required repeated running. Yet seeing everyone coordinate seamlessly—raising a faint, warm lamp to capture those mysterious, cinematic frames in the dark night—made every bit of fatigue worthwhile. From pre-production prop preparation (such as star pendants and kerosene lamps) to final photo selection, we not only balanced compositional proportions but also focused on preserving the whimsical, subtly classical fantasy essence of Touhou Project. This shoot was a truly special creative experience, granting me a deeper understanding of my cosplay portrayal.
