Today's cosplay is Aisaka Taiga. Due to the CICF convention, I chose the plaza outside the venue for an outdoor shoot. This classic black Sailor suit paired with over-the-knee Black stockings and loafers is one of the most familiar looks to everyone. To recreate the presence of the Palmtop Tiger, I did quite a bit of homework on props and poses.
To make the wooden sword light and easy to hold, I specially wrapped it with white tape for anti-slip grip and detail work. That yellow palmtop tiger plushie is definitely the soul prop—not only can it be held in hand, but it can also be perched on the head as an ornament, perfectly echoing the character's nickname. In addition, I brought along a silver suitcase specifically to pull off high-tension, challenging poses like stepping on the suitcase.
Regarding makeup and hair styling, Taiga's signature orange-brown big waves take some real effort to manage. Especially for the curls at the ends, I had to use a flat iron repeatedly to adjust them, keeping them fluffy without getting frizzy. The eye makeup deepened the eyeliner to highlight that tsundere gaze, while blush was applied under the eyes to add a touch of youthful vitality, keeping the overall face clean and translucent.
The natural light at the plaza that day was fantastic, making both skin tone and the texture of the Black stockings look very translucent on camera. Posing while stepping on the suitcase actually requires a certain sense of balance; when placing one foot on the suitcase, the center of gravity must stay steady. The photographer guided my posture holding the wooden sword—from resting it on my shoulder to propping it against the ground—using body language to convey Taiga's small-stature, high-energy presence.
To make the leg lines look better in the photos, the photographer shot from low angles looking up. Combined with the slight edge cinched above the knee by the over-the-knee socks, this visually elongated the leg proportions. Shifting the center of gravity, extending the leg forward, and straightening the instep maximized the display of the Black stockings' texture and body curves. The brown loafers paired with Black stockings gave off a strong academy vibe. Midway through the shoot, the plushie on my head almost tumbled off, but luckily I caught it just in time, and these candid interactions turned into very lively moments.
The CICF venue was bustling, with buildings, trees, and crowds in the background. Using a wide aperture to blur the background allowed the subject to stand out crisply. This shoot was not only an expression of love for the character, but also a great exercise. Cosplaying is more than just wearing the clothes; it requires getting close to the character in demeanor and movement, striking the perfect balance between tsundere and cuteness. Although the whole process was exhausting—constantly adjusting poses under the sun—seeing the final Convention photos made all the preparation and hard work completely worthwhile.
