The final Convention photos from this event turned out wonderful, so here is a share of the shooting process and details behind this Rem cosplay from Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World. This shoot took place during the New World D1 anime convention, where we booked a studio with reflective flooring and an industrial aesthetic. The photographer went by "Just Call Me Dami" (我大米就好了). We had extensive discussions before shooting, aiming to utilize the gray reflective floor tiles and the steel truss overhead, darkening the background in post-processing while preserving foreground colors to create a cool, brooding atmosphere.
There were many costume details this time. Styling the short blue wig required plenty of hair wax and styling spray. To match Rem's signature look, a lot of care went into securing the pearl floral wreath and pink bows on the headpiece, ensuring they wouldn't shift during long posing sessions. The dress is a tiered, layered black-and-white Maid outfit featuring ruffled sleeves and black bows, with structural petticoat support inside to facilitate movement. White stockings were the centerpiece of this outfit and the key to great visuals; the fabric of these White stockings is relatively thick, so lighting reflections required extra care during shooting—adjusting my stance according to reflector angles to avoid blown-out highlights. On my feet, glossy black Mary Jane shoes with buckles cast lovely reflections on the glossy floor.
The shooting process unfolded in four main stages. The first photo was a low-angle shot looking up on a black bar stool; this low-angle composition greatly elongated the legs and beautifully showcased the layering of the White stockings and skirt hem. The photographer had me tilt my body slightly and point my toes straight, creating a high-impact shot. The second photo was a half-body close-up, focusing on upper-body costume details and a finger-heart hand gesture, with a slightly bowed head looking into the lens to create a focused gaze. The third photo had me seated on a round white plush rug, one leg extended and the other bent, leaning slightly back and to the side to capture detailed close-ups and dynamic grace. The fourth photo was a full-body standing pose holding up the skirt hem with both hands, mainly highlighting the puffiness of the Maid outfit and its overall sleek silhouette.
Honestly, convention photography is very demanding—you have to face crowds while finding undisturbed angles. The floor here was quite slippery, so moving in heels or Mary Janes required extreme caution, especially when balancing on the tall stool. During the shoot, the photographer constantly adjusted lighting and reflector angles; because dark fabric on the upper body easily swallows light, side softboxes were used specifically to darken the background while brightening facial contours. In post-processing, special thanks to Dami for grading the background into monochrome tones, retaining vibrant highlights only on my face, blue hair, pink bows, and White stockings, making the overall visual focus pop prominently.
We got quite a lot of final photos, and the four mentioned above are my favorite looks. Convention photos carry a lot of unpredictability, so achieving such great results is truly inseparable from the photographer's upfront preparations and mastery of the overall ambiance. I hope everyone can appreciate the intentional color and compositional design in this set. Given the chance, I'd love to experiment more with industrial-style shoots utilizing reflective floors in the future.
