It's been a few days since I finished shooting this set of Kaenbyou Rin cosplay convention photos, but as I sort through the images, I still feel the details of this outfit are incredibly impressive. The lighting at the convention was chaotic as always, but the photographer managed the light positions perfectly, capturing that dark and fantastical feeling of the costume.
Let's talk about the outfit coordination first. The main piece is a black Gothic Lolita dress, with countless layers of lake-blue translucent pleated gauze stitched onto the collar and skirt hem. Metallic cross chains are hung in a well-spaced manner across the chest and waist, reflecting sparkles of light when I move, which is highly dynamic. The lower half features black stockings with garter straps, paired with platform lace-up Mary Janes, perfectly capturing the character's lightweight yet slightly mischievous feel. For this shoot, I specially chose a wig with a touch of luster. The orange-red twin tails were styled into complex circular braids, which, combined with the black plush animal ears on top of my head, gave the overall styling a very strong outline.
The prop is also the core of this photo set. The handheld skull prop was finely processed; the orange-red decorations in the eye sockets and the lake-blue flame-like material extending from the top perfectly echoed the color scheme of the outfit. I also wore highly exaggerated long white nail claws on my fingertips, which, when raised for poses during the shoot, beautifully elongated my limbs.
The exhibition hall was very crowded on the day of the shoot, with people constantly passing by in the background. To avoid the crowds, we chose an area with high light stands near the edge of the hall. Combining the cool-toned industrial-style overhead light with the softbox, the black outfit showed rich layers, and the light transmission of the blue gauze border looked excellent. The photographer spent the entire shoot crawling on the ground to find angles. Especially for the full-body standing composition in Figure 2, he had to lock in the reflection on the floor while avoiding the crowd cutting off the skirt hem in the background. It took several attempts to finally select a photo with such clean lines.
Actually, there was quite a lot of pressure cosplaying this character. Kaenbyou Rin from Touhou Project has a very unique temperament—she needs both the laziness of a cat and the mysterious coldness of a underworld cart driver. I had to rely on my gaze and body language to draw closer, conveying that bizarre atmosphere of "the cat cart has arrived" through my movements. When I got the finished photos and saw the texture of the skull and the red-and-blue contrasting colors under the lights, I felt those hours of sweating on-site were definitely not in vain.
Finally, special thanks to my fellow hobbyists for their help. Whether it was the early adjustments to the wig or helping me lift my skirt hem to prevent it from dragging or being stepped on, they made this shoot go extremely smoothly. I love this combination of a dark style with a touch of sweetness, and I hope to try more looks with similar elements in my future Anime-style photography journey.
