Having finished shooting this Flandre Scarlet cosplay (Touhou Project) set, I wanted to document the creative thought process and preparation involved.
Because the character has such distinct characteristics, I prepared a red-and-white Lolita dress for the costume, paired with white lace socks (White stockings) and red high heels. For the wig, I used voluminous, long blonde hair paired with crimson contact lens makeup, striving to strike a delicate balance between doll-like charm and the character's fierce, razor-sharp nature.
Set construction was the utmost priority of this shoot. I chose a vintage-style study as the primary setting, where dark wooden bookcases and deep red velvet curtains established a rich color baseline. For lighting, instead of using flat, stark white light, we utilized the warm yellow glow of desk lamps paired with side fill lights, creating a strong chiaroscuro contrast that gave the imagery a heavier, more atmospheric texture for this Vintage photography session.
For prop selection, I prepared a brown teddy bear and a realistic skull. These two props offer a striking sense of contrast: placing innocent, adorable elements alongside symbols of death within the same frame perfectly echoed the character's paradoxical duality. During the shoot, we explored multiple camera angles around the sofa, desk, and bookshelves. Whether holding the skull to show an elusive, spirited side, sitting atop the desk with outstretched legs to accentuate body lines, or cradling the teddy bear to project quiet calmness, every composition blended seamlessly with the surroundings.
To present subtle visual allure and tension in the frame, I intentionally emphasized leg lines in the poses. The White stockings exhibited wonderful texture under the warm lighting, which, combined with the red skirt hem and shoes, kept the visual focal point crystal clear. Post-processing focused on restoring natural skin translucency and introducing subtle vignetting around the edges to heighten the vintage aesthetic. The synergy of set dressing, props, and retouching ultimately brought to life the gorgeous, dark fairy-tale ambiance captured in this photo set.
