This finished shoot of Phrolova cosplay from Wuthering Waves represents one of our most labor-intensive projects recently. The character of Phrolova harbors a distinctive inner contradiction—possessing both the poised elegance of a performer and an elusive, razor-sharp mystery. To authentically capture this essence, the photography crew and I prepped two starkly contrasting outfits during pre-production: a white dress and a Red dress cosplay, seeking to unveil different facets of her psyche.
Let's first talk about the white gown look. The off-the-shoulder pure white maxi dress, paired with a black geometric choker accented with silver details, leaned into a restrained classical elegance. To emphasize the character's musician identity, I wore black gloves and held a violin and bow for a Violin cosplay look. Although not a trained violinist, to ensure photographic authenticity without glaring slip-ups, I researched fundamental violin holding postures and bowing techniques prior to shooting. We shot right at dusk as side lighting streamed between the stone pillars of the European architecture, sculpting a soft, flattering rim light. The ruffled bell sleeves of the white dress held wonderful texture under the light, which, combined with the pale green wig and the red makeup markings beneath the eyes, gave the frame the quiet, timeless texture of a classical oil painting.
In contrast, the visual punch of the Red dress cosplay was dialed to the absolute max. The dramatic red-and-white color-blocking design, the oversized bow at the chest, and the crimson ribbons wrapping around the arms infused the look with palpable visual tension. To complement this styling, I held a red spider lily (Lycoris radiata) prop. The cinched bodice of the red dress is quite tailored, requiring an upright, commanding posture to hold its shape properly before the lens. To project the character's flamboyant, dangerous aura, I adopted more expansive gestures and a more piercing, aggressive gaze. The warm amber rays of the sunset grazed the stonework and floral urns, creating a lavish yet faintly ruined aesthetic, making the red dress look gorgeously rich under the warm glow.
The location featured European-style architecture, where towering stone columns and arches naturally conveyed a sense of gravitas, while pink blossoms blooming in stone basins added vibrant life. The greatest challenge during this shoot was balancing the relationship between props, wardrobe, and environment without cluttering the frame. Before every shutter click, the photographer reminded me to micro-adjust my chin angle and lock the focal point of my gaze. In the white dress, I needed to maintain a transcendent serenity; in the Red dress cosplay, I had to unleash an inner wildness. Alternating between the two looks wasn't just a costume change—it was a psychological reset.
Styling and caring for the wig took considerable thought as well. To achieve that effortlessly voluminous yet slightly disheveled texture, I trimmed and set the wig beforehand; calibrating the thickness of the bangs and the seamless transition of the sideburns required multiple fittings. For eye makeup, the crimson markings under the eyes were the soul of the entire look—needing to stand out distinctly without looking jarring under intense lighting, ultimately achieved by blending matte red eyeshadow with a dab of concealer to soften the edges.
From the absorbed focus while holding the violin to the resolute defiance when clutching the spider lily, every movement was a creative reinterpretation of the character. Being able to present both stylings so completely and bring our vision into reality step by step was immensely rewarding. By the time we wrapped, dusk had turned to night; physically exhausting as it was, seeing the chiaroscuro quality in the finished photos made every adjustment and experiment completely worthwhile in this Anime cosplay journey.
