This photoshoot featuring a fan-made Qipao cosplay styling for Ruan Mei from Honkai: Star Rail took a lot of thought, from early prep to the final pictures. When mentioning Ruan Mei, people usually picture her cool, detached appearance wearing a white lab coat in the laboratory, but this time I wanted to incorporate the theme of "Plum Letters in Blooming Snow" to explore an expressive style rich with Eastern charm. The overall costume design preserves Ruan Mei's signature blue-and-white color scheme while integrating the tailoring structure of a qipao. To recreate the character's gentle yet distant aura, the top features an off-the-shoulder white design with lace trimming, paired with a pink bow and pearl necklace to add exquisite details. The waist features a dark blue corset cincher with golden metal ornaments, while the bottom is an asymmetrical mini-skirt patterned with white floral motifs; the side slit design was intended to flatter the leg lines when seated while allowing comfortable movement.
Because I chose a qipao-styled mini-skirt, for the lower half I paired white lace garter stockings (White stockings) with pearl leg garters around the thighs, creating richer visual depth. The shoes are dark blue pointed-toe high heels with golden hardware on the toes, perfectly echoing the metallic elements at the waist. For props, I prepared a white folding fan; whether half-covering the face or held during motion, it greatly enriches the storytelling of the frame. For the gloves, I deliberately opted for an asymmetrical styling: a short white lace glove on one hand and an over-the-elbow dark blue glove on the other. This unconventional combination keeps the silhouette dynamic and aligns well with the design flair of Anime cosplay.
The shoot location was decorated in a classical indoor style, featuring carved wooden chairs, a daybed covered with a plush white fleece blanket, plus blue-and-white sheer bed hangings and plum blossom branches in the backdrop. To complement the "Plum Letters in Blooming Snow" theme, the lighting was skewed cool-toned overall to evoke the tranquil solitude of a snowy night. In designing poses, I intentionally featured crossed legs or one knee bent while extending the other leg, as the mini-skirt and leg ring design produce fantastic visual impact when seated. When handling the folding fan, the rotation of the wrist and the direction of the gaze required repeated calibrations to capture that effortless, aloof grace. The entire shoot was genuinely a test of stamina and attention to detail: the drape of the sheer drapes, the angle of the fan, even the slight tilt of a hairpiece all influenced the final result.
As a coser, whenever portraying a character, I strive to stay as close as possible to the original design from costume and props to overall temperament, while weaving in personal interpretations and innovation. This Ruan Mei cosplay qipao styling was quite a bold endeavor, and I hope everyone can feel a different ambiance from this photo set.
