Today I am sharing the shooting and retouching insights from this Honkai: Star Rail Black Swan Cosplay photoshoot. Bringing this series together from early preparation to final delivery took over a month. Black Swan's costume is remarkably distinctive, featuring purple and black color-blocking; I chose fabrics with a velvet sheen that reflected studio lighting gorgeously. Her hat is exceptionally wide, so several internal support layers were constructed to maintain its crisp silhouette. Because of its large brim, I had to be mindful of framing angles constantly so it wouldn't cast unwanted shadows over my face while preserving the flowing layers of the hair. The wig featured a silver-to-purple gradient, prepped with generous styling spray to achieve that ethereal, floating effect.

The luminous crystal rose held in hand posed a real challenge. Made of resin and fitted with internal LED lights, its high brightness easily made hand postures look stiff if held improperly. Wearing black gloves, I repeatedly fine-tuned my grip so the bloom's glow illuminated my chin and eyes just right, crafting an enigmatic aura. The first close-up emphasized the gaze and the prop: golden contact lenses paired with purple eyeshadow created a piercing, mesmerizing intensity. The second shot was a high-angle full-body view of me seated on a chair, designed to accentuate the boots, Black stockings, and bodily silhouette. Capturing this required numerous micro-adjustments to chair height, skirt slit placement, and leg angles, while keeping the boot straps taut and neat to ensure crisp lines on camera.

The third wide shot incorporated an array of props: the backdrop featured starry night sky and geometric designs, layered with suspended origami stars and playing cards to enrich visual complexity. During the shoot, red-orange bokeh in the background clashed against the cool white glow of the crystal rose, yielding dramatic warm-and-cool contrast. Since I handled both shooting and post-processing myself, the retouching phase was quite extensive. I concentrated heavily on refining light and shadow, particularly intensifying the rose's self-illuminating bloom to feel genuinely magical. Because purple palettes easily turn muddy, I selectively pulled up highlight details while preserving deep, rich shadow gradients.

Throughout the entire shoot, managing garment details was demanding. Shoulder ornaments and detached sleeves required meticulous adjustment to follow body contours without shifting during poses. Black Swan naturally projects an elegant, mysterious, yet subtly predatory presence. To convey this, I engaged my core, kept my shoulders relaxed and dropped, and held an unwavering gaze either directed straight at the lens or cast slightly downward. Although donning this attire was tedious and mobility was restricted, the finished frames made every ounce of effort worthwhile. I hope experimenting with these novel lighting approaches offers helpful inspiration to fellow enthusiasts of Anime-style photography.
