In front of the glass curtain wall at the IJOY Anime Convention, this set of Sparkle's cosplay event photos was captured just like this.
In terms of clothing, the red and black color-blocked modified Japanese-style outerwear has an excellent texture under the lights. The off-the-shoulder design at the chest, combined with a black leather choker and golden bells, adds a sense of crispness to the overall look. The fabric is printed with intricate patterns, and the black belt around the waist creates a sharp silhouette, further decorated with blue round ball knot ropes, making the layers highly rich. The bow hair accessories and fox mask are indispensable core elements; without them, the character's temperament would be cut in half. To recreate those eyes that carry a hint of passion and playfulness, I specially chose pink colored contacts and added two red teardrop makeup dots under the eyes. Paired with the red-and-black gradient highlights at the hair tips, when the final makeup look came out, I thought, yes, this is exactly the vibe I was looking for.
Most of the poses during the shoot were improvised on-site. For instance, the photo where I have one leg propped up while holding a slipper looks casual, but it actually required good physical balance to let the textures of the skirt hem and the red straps around the waist reveal natural lines without looking too forced. The key is to relax the toes, letting the posture carry a kind of nonchalant playfulness, which perfectly fits the character's temperament. The two shots of sitting on the white plush carpet are actually more relaxed; holding the mask in hand while gently touching the bow hair accessory on top of my head, my gaze under the lens can be slightly restrained, carrying just a hint of a cunning expression.
The biggest fear when taking cosplay event photos is a stiff posture. The photographer gave me a lot of freedom to interact with the lens myself and find that rhythm of "Elation." When leaning against the glass railing or sitting on the ground, I would intentionally let the red hem of the dress spread out naturally. This not only gives the color blocks more impact but also echoes the character's passionate and free-spirited personality. That pair of black half-finger gloves is also a nice touch; combined with small finger movements, it adds a bit of neutral, sharp texture to the overall photos.
I have to praise the glass curtain wall at the shooting venue. Its reflection became an unexpected pleasant surprise. Especially in the leg close-up photo, my image holding up the mask was reflected on the glass. The spatial depth and ghosting effect give the photo itself a more narrative meaning. This set of photos can be said to have fully utilized the lighting at the convention venue. The translucent ambient light makes the frame clean and bright, and the glass did not produce overly chaotic reflections; instead, it made the red and black in the foreground more pure, even capturing the drape of the tassels on the hem with extreme delicacy.
When playing this character, the hardest part isn't actually how heavy the clothes are or how time-consuming the makeup is, but how to convey the character's quirky, do-as-she-pleases personality traits in static photos. The cold, modern environment of the convention hall, combined with this bright red and bold attire, often collides to create a wonderful visual chemical reaction. The slight swaying of the tassels and bells reminds me at all times to maintain the character's lively energy.
To be able to capture so many satisfying frozen moments in the same venue, I have to thank our tacit cooperation during the shoot. This is not just about putting a costume on your body, but trying to understand and interpret the character's behavioral style in the 2D world, staying close to the character's charm through every detail. The fun of cosplay event photos probably lies exactly in this—using the lens to capture a frozen fragment of a character's life, making even flat photos overflow with a living breath.
