This set of Jeanne d'Arc (Alter) photos was taken recently in an abandoned warehouse adjacent to the convention hall. We selected this location primarily to leverage the gritty, industrial aesthetic to complement the dark edge intrinsic to Jeanne Alter. The shoot itself was demanding; the venue was bitterly cold, and lighting relied chiefly on overhead skylights, casting cool, bluish-white daylight across the reflective concrete to create an aloof, striking texture.
The wardrobe featured a modernized Qipao whose high side slit, paired with black thigh garters and sheer black stockings, strictly tested bodily proportions. To highlight leg lines at their finest, the photographer deliberately framed from a low-angle upward perspective. The single-leg standing pose in Photo 2 demanded immense core stability and balance—holding the broadsword in one hand while steadying the banner with the other made tipping off-balance very easy. Compounded by chunky black platform heels, capturing that pose required dozens of shutter clicks before selecting the single frame with flawless poise and expression.
Regarding props, both the greatsword and the battle standard carried substantial weight; the flagpole was exceptionally long, making maneuvers awkward in tight spaces. On set, crew members helped direct air to flutter the wig strands, achieving that dynamic, windblown look. The black horn headpiece was heavy, requiring numerous bobby pins anchored into the scalp that pulled constantly throughout the day, yet the immaculate visual payoff made it worthwhile.
Makeup underwent several iterations: the initial application appeared washed out on camera, leading me to deepen the eyeshadow and apply a bold crimson lip to bring out her fierce, combative aura. In post-processing, we cleaned up distracting background wires and debris while preserving ambient puddle reflections, dipping overall ambient exposure to make the subject pop. Minimal skin smoothing and liquefying were applied to maintain the authentic light dynamics and raw physique of an on-site convention shoot. The crimson piping on the Qipao and the red gem on the sword hilt served as vibrant accents contrasting sharply with the cool environment. Ultimately, merging an industrial backdrop with a high-slit Qipao and black stockings delivered striking visual tension, radiating a fierce, stylish presence.
