[Jeanne d'Arc (Alter) Cosplay] The Dragon Witch in Oiran Attire

For this shoot, we chose FGO's Jeanne d'Arc (Alter) as the theme, placing this character who is originally full of combativeness and malice into a gorgeous Japanese-style Oiran gown. The intention was not to erase her sharp edges, but to present a quiet, cold state during a still moment after shedding her battlefield hostility.

The costume features a deep dark blue intertwined with navy blue as the base color, with the outer fabric showcasing delicate jacquard textures. Bold gold prints combine foil stamping and embroidery techniques, featuring floral medallions, chrysanthemums, and traditional cloud motifs throughout. The broad, draping sleeves are made of thick fabric, giving a satisfying sense of weight and drape when raising arms or swinging sleeves. The obi sash uses a vibrant red brocade silk patterned with subtle gold cloud motifs. It creates a striking contrast against the dark kimono, pulling the visual focus to her waist and emphasizing the opulence of the Oiran look. The neckline is designed in an off-the-shoulder style, exposing the collarbone and necklines to balance out the kimono's heavy structure.

For hair and makeup, the long white hair has a smooth, silky texture. The black headpiece atop features a pair of hard, horn-like structures, accented on both sides with eye-catching pink tassels. This asymmetrical design breaks the traditional dignity of the kimono, adding a touch of sharpness and eerie eccentricity. Bright golden-yellow contact lenses were chosen for makeup, creating a striking contrast against the dark outfit. The long pipe held in hand becomes a visual extension of the overall look, its golden curved bowl standing out clearly against the dark background. The black beast mask featured in the second photo—black with gold patterns—instantly shifts the character's aura when switching props, evoking a mysterious, ghostly sense of Japanese folklore.

The scene location selected an indoor space featuring Japanese shrine elements. Vivid vermilion wooden pillars, white shoji paper doors, and shimenawa ropes suspended from the ceiling accurately anchored the scene's tone. The red standing lantern on the back right and gray stepping stones on the floor, paired with deep blue ambient lighting, created a serene and mysterious spatial atmosphere. This red-blue color-contrast lighting is exceptionally suited for dark, Japanese-style expressions in Anime-style photography.

During shooting, both wide shots and close-ups were needed. Wide shots showcased the costume's full silhouette and interaction with the scene, while close-ups brought viewers closer to the character. To express the character's inner vulnerability and brokenness, I avoided exaggerated expressions and deliberately restrained my emotions, presenting a faint sense of scrutiny and detachment in my gaze. While holding props, ensuring natural, unrigid hand postures was key through repeated adjustments. Throughout the process, the photographer used rim lighting from side-back angles to illuminate hair strands and golden patterns, making the opulent textures pop even more in the frames.

Although this look appears overtly flamboyant and gorgeous on the surface, the core underlying color of Jeanne d'Arc (Alter) is tragic and bleak. Thus, I deliberately avoided the seductive and delicate posture typical of traditional Oiran, opting instead to capture a cool-toned aesthetic—an aura charming without being vulgar, icy without being harsh. The solitude beneath red garments and the sense of destiny amidst white hair found visual expression in these photos. I hope these images can convey the character's complex mind, presenting a Jeanne d'Arc (Alter) cosplay under a unique style of possibility.
