[Altria cosplay] Fate/Grand Order: Sharing a Sailor Suit Shoot in Spring Sunlight

Taking advantage of the spring cherry blossom season, I went to shoot an Altria cosplay from Fate/Grand Order. The weather was truly critical for this photo set—it had been raining for several days, and we just happened to catch a clear, sunny afternoon for our outdoor shoot. The light falling across the clothing and hair was remarkably clear and luminous.

The gear used this time was a Sony A7C2 paired with the 135GM Telephoto lens. For Anime-style photography, a Telephoto lens really benefits from front-to-back depth to give a 2D image a distinct three-dimensional sense of spatial presence. During the shoot, we intentionally sought out a cherry blossom trail with receding perspective, utilizing the creamy bokeh of the Telephoto lens to compress the background cherry blossoms and messy foliage, making the subject's 3D presence immediately stand out.

In terms of poses and composition, I experimented with two approaches. The first was a pose turning back over the shoulder while holding the sword; since the sword has length and the telephoto shooting distance was relatively far, the lines of the sword effectively guided the viewer's gaze. The second was a frontal standing pose, which better showcased the overall leg lines and the tailoring of the sailor suit. Comparatively, the second shot was more centered with a cleaner, more balanced composition.

Pairing this outfit with the prop was very interesting, combining sailor suit aesthetics with sword elements. Against the spring backdrop, the sunlight reflecting off the White stockings and black shoes looked fantastic, adding a touch of warmth to the cool palette of early spring. During shooting, I really enjoyed the 135GM focal length—the spatial compression provided by the telephoto reach was truly incredible. A friend mentioned trying out the Viltrox 135 LAB next time if given the chance, which might bring a distinct flavor.

Because sunny weather was hard to come by, the overall shoot went quite smoothly. In post-processing, we mainly adjusted the overall color temperature and contrast between light and dark, striving to preserve the translucent light and shadow texture from the raw shots while maintaining the Anime-style photography ambiance essential to cosplay. Outdoor shoots under natural light still require attention to many details, such as timing the blooming period and avoiding crowds. That's about all for this shoot's share!
